Far Cry 3 Thread

running High all apart from Shadows, PostProcessing Ultra, 2xMSAA - 40fps average on my 480 :)

great fun game - really enjoying it - although as others have said - some very annoying parts too- so its not all perfect

a solid 9/10 though

for those who can only carry one weapon simple craft a bigger weapons holster
and remember msaa or wot ever it is eats vram ,,i would recommend to use after burner on screen display to see gpu mem usage and ajust according

Guys need to realize that a game of this genre and type, is not only very unique but incredibly hard to nail right, get some parts of it even the slightest bit wrong and it blows the formula right out of the water, so considering that this game is incredibly good for what it is, is impressive. The only game to get it right was STALKER but even that was far from perfect, it just felt perfect because it was all there was. Far Cry 2 and 3 are absolutely brilliant imo.

Performance wise:

Q6600 @ 3.4ghz
gtx470 @797:1750
1650x1050

Everything on ultra, post processing on low.

Post processing turned down gave a massive performance boost and I prefer the look of it as it reduces some of the ridiculously overdone DoF effect. I get 40fps average, sometimes dipping to 30 often hovering between 50 and 60 for most areas. Only drops down when looking out across vast landscapes or in heavy fighting. tbh I've never had a problem gaming at 30fps so it doesn't affect me.

LOL you completely mad? a stock i5 2500k and a 670 will run this game not issue. Low-medium settings? Am running ultra No MSAA and getting 60fps solid.

you must have clocked your card so it's like you've got sli 670's. Even then you're probably only getting 15fps when there's action.

Far Cry 2 its feeling more and more like, fixed some things(making area's safe and without the travelling issues) but making it FAR too easy.
yup games boring everything seems the same theres almost no difference between the part of the map you start on and the bit your on 5 hours later.
I dont feel like exploring or taking anymore camps or towers and the games story does nothing for me.

I will wait for some mods or something that adds anything interesting to the game.

As i said before it feels like just cause 2 but without the stunts and all the fun has been removed.

Just cause 2 was kind of interesting to explore a swell though :S

Barely more so, even if it did do things better, i never really liked playing after the story, after a few hours of diving planes into the ground.

I liked JC2 but thought gunplay was to weak so was looking forward to this

it's because you've clocked your CPU. If you hadn't done that, you'd have to play it on low-medium.

I bet he hasn't tried the Ultra High setting though. That would put a massive strain on his CPU and 4.4 overclock just isn't enough.

I'm playing on Ultra, everything maxed out on video quality, 2x msaa, hbao, alpha to coverage set at enhanced (no idea what this does), and finally no OC on the 670. With more testing with fraps it averages around the 50-55, easily playable enough for me not to want to turn down any settings.

Do either of you even have a 670? If so, better look into your set up to see if anything is up. This game has no performance issues on my end.

So basically the game is a bore to play, is that what DM is saying.

Yeah, it's pretty dull.

I just stood on the top of one of the radio towers and looked out over the beautiful scenery, I could see for miles (well at least a blurry version of miles, because that's what the engine does to reduce overhead - it just blurs stuff) and just thought. "Can I really be bothered?". Instead I just thought I'd come on here and moan.

GOOD:
  • Graphics are nice, looks pretty, but nothing ground breaking. The sky is the best I've seen in a game.
  • Decent performance
  • The fire is the best I've seen in a game.
  • Nice scenery in places
  • The "torch in a dark cave effect" is the best I've seen in a game, by miles. Definitely like that.
  • The guns are good, feel "solid"
  • Movement is good, like the cover system and the sprint/slide stuff. Falling down hills has never been done so well. We definitely need the fall/slide way of flying down a hill on other games (BF3 for example). Surely the days of bouncing down a hill like a rock should be behind us.
  • Errrrrm........
  • Takedowns are very satisfying
  • It's fun in short bursts, but in short bursts you don't get anything done.
  • It's full of good ideas, but they're just poorly implemented

BAD:
  • Loot boxes - moronic, why have them? It's so annoying. Why do they think we enjoy this? Skyrim and Fallout have the right idea. For reference - all games developers please note - more "Oh look - a drawer, It;s quite possible and realistic that there might be something useful in that. Oh, it's just a shirt. Do I want to pick that up? No? Well I'll just leave it in that drawer then. Thanks. Next..." and less "Oh look a flashing loot box in a field, *open it up* oh it's just some cash and a dolls head I don't want that, Oh, I have to take it do I? I have no choice? Really? oh yep, yeah it's in my inventory and now i have to go into this clumsy UI to drop it" please....
  • Stupid repetitive animations for everything, from skinning dogs to chopping plants
  • There's cash just lying around everywhere. EVERYWHERE! Why?! Why do these people leave cash everywhere?
  • Some of the textures are garbage
  • Free/cheap weapons - no progression in that sense
  • Good idea for a story - stupid implementation, ridiculous relationship between bad and good guys
  • Graphics look cartoony, should be gritty
  • Limited character models
  • Stupid red tshirts on the bad guys and they drive unnecessarily camp/gay jeeps
  • You always end up picking up crap like dolls heads and playing cards (WTF?)
  • Awful map system
  • Awful key binding - bugged to hell
  • Awful UI for crafting
  • Awful menu system
  • Awful low res massive XBOX360 HUD and map
  • Stupid animations for healing, once in a while is good, but every time?
  • Moronic quick time events
  • Bullet impact decals are rubbish. They hardly ever work properly on characters. Even Far Cry 1 managed to get this right.
  • Moronic "PRESS SPACE" messages ALL the *&#£ing time treating you like a complete idiot. After the bajillionth loot box I KNOW WHICH BUTTON TO PRESS, BUT THANKS ANYWAY.
  • The physics engine is awful - plastic chairs don't move when shot or when C4 goes off near them, boxes hardly do anything, bodies fly for miles and do that terrible slide-down-a-hill-like-its-made-of-butter thing from about 10 years ago.
  • AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL humour about ex wives and mother in laws in the guides. It's just not funny. At all.
  • Just feels "lazy" - the world is shallow, the game is hollow
  • 90% of the huts are pointless, with only one door inout and therefore no use at all for anything, especially not creating interesting combat scenarios. At least in crysis the walls fell down and you could sneak through buildings, these are just lifeless sheds to break up an otherwise boring landscape.
  • Just evokes the memory of Far Cry 2 too much
  • Stuff has just been plonked on the map. Feels like it was made with a posh version of Mario Paint
  • You can't talk to anyone, there's no interaction and hence no reason to care about the "good guys"
  • Gets stale very quickly - same same
  • You're too much of a badass too quickly. One minute you're crying like a girl because you have to sneak away from some baddies, the next you're ramming a machete through their spine and gutting a tiger.
  • Pointless handgliders
  • Judging by the accents, 90% of the population seem to be of South African descent. Not sure how that works as I thought it was set in the Pacific.
  • Had the potential to be great, the story is actually quite gritty and really could have been awesome, but the implementation is dire. Bad attempts at comedy, colour pallete is too bright and over-saturated, reliance on drugs being "cool", ridiculous

The most disappointing thing is the implementation of the story. It could be great (without the tribal warfare garbage) and should be gritty. The bad guy is really bad and a very good villain. He cold bloodedly executes 4 people in a row about 5 minutes in (not really a spoiler, don't worry) and I was thinking "this is going to be good", but then all this rubbish tribal warfare guff happens and you just end up shooting the same enemy character model over and over again, and when that character model is dressed up like a 17 yr old rapper and drives a bum-mobile its pretty hard to get sucked in.

It very rapidly gets to the point where the innocent corpses bound and strung up from trees/cranes just look out of place, when they should evoke some kind of emotion, like horror, at least something. You just end up going "oh look, yeah, dead people... LOOT BOX!"

This game had potential but from the amount of hand-holding and obvious dumbing-down of what could have been some excellent material, its clear that this game has been made to satisfy the moon-faced, mouth-breathing fools that sadly make up a very large proportion of the worlds population.

If I was reviewing it, I'd give it

58%

Must try harder. Or just stop trying.

Far Cry 2 was terrible. Awful, truly shocking. You couldn't even walk up hills. That's how bad it was. That game killed a part of my soul, it was so disappointing. I've never been the same since.

OC to 1100/1500 and my FPS never drops passed 50fps

some people just cant detect ridiculously obvious sarcasm :p

even funnier when they start getting wound up by it...

For everyone who says there is no weapon progression, you unlock more weapons later on (and I'm not referring to getting the ones you can already see now for free). You get signature weapons from completing Trials, collecting Relics/Cards/Letters and also get more available weapons as you progress through the story including a rather tasty 50 Cal Sniper Rifle :)

Also, you can't explore the whole map from the start but I won't explain that as it's a mild spoiler.

Loving the game so far, it does get harder although you have plenty of gear so if you plan/play well then you shouldn't need to die often (but I don't see that as a bad thing).

There are some awesome characters, Buck is probably my "favorite" so far. There are also some cool set pieces and it really feels like a lot of love has gone into the game despite it not being flawless.

i7 930 @ 3.8ghz, Msi 7970oc @ 1095/1525 - game gives me 35fps @ ultra, no msaa, 45fps on very high, and 55 - 60fps @ high. All @ 2560 x 1440. But if I lower the resolution to 1080p, I get 60fps @ Ultra! Badly optimized for 1440p. Need crossfire.

Also anything below 60fps causes frameskipping, which is so damn obvious when strafing left/right so I just stick to high preset.

7970 showing its age already.
