What happens to notes if you don't take them and leave them in the tray, do they get supped back in or does it sit there until someone takes it?

There used to be a trick you could do with those cash machines in shops (the ones that charge you £2.50 to take your money out) whereby you could get into the management screen (using a default password which was rarely changed) then swap around the £10 and £20 holders in the system. Then you put your card in take out say £100 and you'd get £200 but only a hundred would be logged against your account. You then logged back into the management screen and swapped them back again.

Pretty sure they've stopped it now though.

A cash machine will typically give you 4x£20 and 2x£10 if you withdraw £100.

Unless you could change it so all the cash came from one holder, or select notes of all one denomination, you'd end up with 4x£10 and 2x£20.

It'd cost you £102.50 and you'd receive £80.

There are magnets in the currency cassettes, usually 4 magnets.The denomination of the cassette is determined by the arrangement of the magnets polarity and the note configuration in the software. For instance on HBOS atm's a £20 cassette is magnet 1 up and magnet 3 down.

When the wrong cash is given, it's generally either one of a few things. The magnets are set incorrectly for the cassette, the note configuration is incorrect or the staff have put the wrong cash in the wrong cassette. The later happens quite often.

Oh and if cash isn't taken, the dispenser retracts it back in and dumps it in the purge bin.

It's not true.

I wasn't there and neither was my mum, so I have no way of knowing if its 100% true or not. All I know is what my mums friend told my mum and my mum told me. The friend could have been making it all up for all I know.
