nzbmatrix quits

Seems these big media companies have shot themselves in the foot, by closing nzbmatrix, a hub where everyone can download stuff in a reasonably controlled environment.... isnt everyone just going to splinter off and create their own indexing service using newznab?

This would make it near impossible for all of them to be shut down. Because of this 1 site being shut down, hundreds or possibly even thousands of people will run their own personal indexing service.

Exactly why I can't understand why they bother with this sort of thing.

They cut off one of the big heads and a thousand other little heads grow :p

The developer for Newznab must be raking it in now :p £10 minimum for each

/edit my bad was talking about nzbzrus or whatever its called

Tell me about it and how much of a coincidence was it that they announced that due to financial issues (surprisingly on the 9th of December ) that they're limiting the site to paid subscribers.

He's one big ******

They are still cutting off "the big heads". All of the usenet providers are fully DMCA compliant, with automatic take downs. The reason a lot of these sites are closing down is DMCA have recently implemented auto-requests so a lot of the content is taken down within minutes, let alone hours, of being posted. The index sites are being asked to remove the NZBs they have for those posts, but typically they are useless anyway because the content has already been removed. Ergo, you can index all you want - the content won't be there. Akin to trying to torrent something that nobody is seeding.

NZBMatrix couldn't keep up with the sheer volume of DMCA requests because they haven't implemented an automatic take down, and the admin(s) soon discovered the site would be worthless if they were to comply with every take down anyway because there would be nothing left. So they took the money and ran.

They bother because the aim is not to stamp out piracy, everyone knows that is impossible but what they want to do is highlight the issue and make it more challenging. One of the main drivers for downloading is that it is so easy hency it is generally the most straighforward system that is the most popular be it Napster, Kazzar, torrents from the pirate bay or Usenet. They hope that by taking down the big players a lot of the casual downloaders who don't understand half the concepts being discussed in this thread will be forced back to itunes etc. It also serves to highlight that piracy is being taken seriously so may make some people more nervous about doing it in the first place.

Effectively what you've done is a format shift, even if your chosen method of shift was a download and the powers that be have said nobody will be charged for this in the UK. It will soon become a right as it is a defacto one already, what you talk about is not what the movie/music industry are interested in at all and you know it.

Got to say it's good to see the news groups taking some stick after all the people who have said they were safe and nver going to be touched while we watched the worlds authorities chase the pirate bay and Kim dot com.

Sadly it looks like Kim dot come is going to get off despite being a total scum bag who's made millions out of other peoples creative works it makes me sad to think our legal systems support scum like him rather than the people who actually create things.

I think you need to reassess your views on what makes someone "scum".

How is Kim dot com not a scum bag? he made millions of punds by making piracy easy he has contributed nothing to the creative arts that he profited from and has then proceeded to flaunt this for all the world to see. He is the very essence of scum, I didn't say all downloaders were scum just incase thats what you read just the specific individual.

I know exactly what you said, and it's nonsense. Why not whinge about ISPs or hard disk manufacturers who are also raking in millions on the back of piracy too? They're also "scum", right?

I know hard drives have legitimate uses, but considering that every single pirate uses a hard drive to enable their pirating, something should be done about it. ;)

You might as well start calling all free file hosts & CDNs scum.
