A new Steam console ?

Lol no market share?

I'm pretty convinced that Steam has the user numbers and fame for companies like Facebook or Netflix to want to be a part of their home PC ecosystem...

What are you on about. At no point did I say they didn't have a way to distribute it. I said they have no apps to distribute, they will not have any marketshare for most producers to make apps for their specific OS, they would need to use androids App Store.

You are trying to tell people that "apps" are different to software, they aren't.

I wouldn't expect this to do anything other than play games. Maybe DVDs if lucky.

I guess you would be able to browse the web with the steam browser as well.

Have you even read any posted I've told you what MS with windows is going through?

Yet you think developers are going to develop for one platform which is going to be absolutely tiny.

Are they going to sell 40million consoles in three days? And yet that's still not enough clout for lots of developers yet.
They going to bank roll a few big apps?
They going to to run workshops?

If steam go down their own App Store. It will end up like osx App Store, ie useless.

No, I'm saying they are different to conventional software. Which they very much are.
That should be obviuse. Everyone k owe mobile apps are vastly different to pc software. From controls to style and everything inbetween.

OSX App store is useless because a browser already provides the best experience for using things like Facebook or Netflix in a desktop environment... we are talking about a Valve Linux distro with integrated Steam this is a very different beast to OSX.

If companies like Facebook and Netflix already make 'Apps' for tiny ecosystems like LG TV's or Sony TV's then sure as hell I believe they will make software to more easily use their products on a Valve home entertainment system...

I think most people are missing the point. It's a games console, not an app console.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all had consoles out in the past that only ran games.

If Valve feel the need to integrate other applications, I'm sure they will.

edit: There's even api's available for major services anyway. Getting Facebook on your Steam-box won't be difficult :p

When ms and Sony first released consoles, these things didnt exist. They do now.
Steam can't or shouldn't release a dumb box. It would fail.
People don't want clutter and price of a thousand different devices in the lounge.

When the first revision of the 360 came out, I'm fairly sure it had no way too hook into Facebook/Myspace other than a web browser?

As far as I'm aware, samsung use the google tv software or a modified version of it, so essentially android.

And yet windows store has double the amount of osx apps in a bare month and a bit.
Old software just isn't the easiest or best way to do many things in this new time, the landscape has change. Nearly ever man and their dog has a smart phone and prefer it to traditional desktops. The rise of smart phones and tablets has been insane.

Well your awareness is categorically wrong then. They use nothing of the sort.

The Windows store is useless and hasn't provided me with anything since installing W8 except a pretty weather screen when I want which would be easier to use if it had a desktop shortcut...

Of course it did, the PSP had a browser, and it came out about 2 years before the PS3.

The PS2 didn't also "only run games" it ran DVDs too, and could run Linux as well with the right addons.

So Steam are releasing a console and all people care about is whether it will have things like facebook apps? I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

He is trying to argue that a home console needs the same rich App ecosystem as IOS or Android when the PS3 and 360 are living proof they dont.

Steam hardware will be competing in the console space not the tablet or smartphone space, essentially his argument is flawed.

Sounds like Glaucus is scared this might work.

I say i can't wait!

Good luck Valve!

Not at all.
I have no issues with it working, if it worked I might even get one. But don't have much faith in Gabes recent moves.
And simply if it doesn't have an App Store with apps it will fail. It's as simple as that. It's allready in a niche market and is unlikely to have a massive indent on current console suppliers. It's main target IMO is replacing desktops. With people who have tablets for 90% of their use and still want to pc game.

And I'm exactly that sort of person. My desktop since getting a tablet is gaming rig. That's it. Consoles generaly don't have the games I want. So if this works it would be great. I also when ever possible, exclusively buy from steam.

And people have blowen it out of proportion, seeing as I even said in my first post they could use android.

No, they do not need the same level of apps, but they do need apps. Something Xbox and ps3 both have.
The number of apps and the importance of apps, will also grow with time.

A lot of peoples arguments on this page, its pretty simple.

Valve are making a home entertainment system using Steam to distribute there games/software.

I can't see why this wouldn't be a massive success. There is not 1 thing in its way stopping it.
