North Korea launch "satellite"

What I meant by short notice, was based on the premise that they used the same method to intercept and destroy enemy missiles as well as or instead of satellites.

I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be a problem, only how would they explain there reasoning behind destroying the satellite when they (USA, China or some other power) when they themselves have plenty themselves.

But could they do that at short notice?

The satellites they destroyed probably took months of planning etc....

The US could, quite easily. Just Google ASM-135 ASAT and then think how far technology has advanced since then.

I can't blame them to be honest google maps has let them down a bagful not surprised they are launching their own satellites.

Have a look at Pyongyang

Whilst there are the obvious concerns over what the technology may be used for eventually, should there really be so much outcry and shouting?
They should be as entitled as any other country to develop and launch their own space program and satellites.

I am sure there is a lot of posturing behind though, but it does seem that things are only inflammed by keep condemning the North Koreans.

On the same premise that they should be entitled to develop and launch their own space stuff, we should be entitled to disagree and stop it. If we had any remote trust in their peaceful endeavours it would be fine, but North Korea are pretty much as crackpot as it gets.

Shooting a satellite down whilst in orbit is not something you wish to do really, as they tend to break up into thousands of small objects. These then fly about really fast in unstable orbits and then likely destroy other normal orbiting objects.
There is a scenario that states that if this happens a few times, then there could be a cascade effect which has the potential to destroy ALL orbiting objects.

Shooting things down is an ultimate last resort!
