Do we live in a computer simulation?

Interesting theory. When you consider that scientists are already producing simulations of the early universe (http://www.space.com/17530-universe-dark-energy-supercomputer-simulation.html) then it may be possible to do this in the far far future. There would definitely be an interest from the scientific and historical community.

This also means that the likelyhood of us being the 'original' universe is tiny. There is a far greater chance of us being a simulation in the original universe, or a simulation in a simulation in a simulation etc.

However, from our point of view it doesn't matter one bit.

There is a far greater chance of us being a simulation in the original universe, or a simulation in a simulation in a simulation etc.

This actually a pretty potent statement. If you assume that time is infinite (disregard any inflation/expansion theories in this case) in the "original" universe and that the simulation is left running..

Then it isn't infeasible to assume that a simulation would develop a "life-form" capable of creating it's own universe simulation and that simulation creating it's own etc.

If the "original" simulation is running on a computer in the classical sense, there would come a point where these recursive simulations cause an "out of memory" error (resulting from a stack-overflow, as we might call it) causing a crash which suddenly ends all but the original.

We might then reason that if we are living in a simulation, we're probably the root simulation and it would be impossible for us to create our own, due to safe-guards imposed by the level or "original" above us.

I'd be quite happy to be in a simulation.. But please.. Can I have a better one! This one I'mnot enjoying!

The life question is going to get a lot more blurred very soon.. Organic based computers etc

People Get too hung up on how special and unique we are.. Alive isn't black and white

Computers inside of computers.

Well, I think the fact that the first Oxford dictionary definition of life is that it is:

"the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter"

pretty much rules that theory out :p

So you at saying we merly need to make organic computers, which already exist in research forms, to generate true life?

The human brain and computer both uses the few of electrons across a circuit to control, processes and responses. There is fundamentally no difference. One uses silicon and one carbon, but that is like saying a glass table is not table since it is not made of wood.

A brain is a computer and abode a machine, in all senses of the words.
