Road Cycling Essentials

Finally got myself a decent commuter light. Went with the Lezyne Macro Drive. What sold it for me was that it's a zero nuts/screws affair. Uses rubber mount to attach to bars for super quick removal and the light itself just slides in and out of the clamp. Bought a spare clamp so I can swap the light between bikes in seconds.

Definitely pricier than the Chinese jobbies but I wanted something I know I could rely on and should I have any problems then the store is only up the road so getting it replaced is a non issue. It's also really small and USB chargeable so perfect commuter light imo.

If they don't need to be waterproof I bought some 3M Thermalite's from Sainsbury's for £4 and they're pretty toasty even on the few sub zero days they did a good job.

Almost hit a cyclist this evening. Some utter retard wearing all black clothing and not a single light, not even any retro reflective parts too, so completely unlit. There wasn't any cars coming the other way either so I couldn't see him stand out against the headlights.

Lets just say I wouldn't have any sympathy if he gets killed sometime soon.

Amazes me how dumb some cyclists/commuters are with their lack of lights in an evening. My lights let me see and be seen. The pointless little single LED's don't really achieve either of those.

Help!

My dad is the most impossible person to buy presents for, even before he sold his house and now works in Abu Dhabi. He's planning on taking his Spec Tricross there the next time he goes back for riding around the F1 circuit and back streets etc. What could I get him as a present related to cycling?

I was going to get an unusual Foska Jersey (Newcastle Brown Ale or Marmite etc) but £50 is a bit too much just for one thing like that. Some slick tyres are a bit boring and a hydration pack is a bit too much too. Any ideas?

PS. This is so last minute because he only told me yesterday that was buying a bike case to take it back with him.

Yeah I signed up around 10 mins after it went live :)

Loosely plans are to get a century in tomorrow. 50 on Xmas Day. 80-90 Boxing day then I should be left with around 80 miles to either do in one go or two 40's which I'll plan around the days with the nicest weather.

In fact my route tomorrow will probably go quite near where you're based :)

Has anybody ever seen a road biker without lights & brightly coloured garments.
I can honestly say that every day I will come across at least 20 other cyclists all riding MTBs and every single one of them have no lights, no helmet and dark clothing and of course they mostly ride on the pavement.
I've yet to see a road biker without the proper gear except my mate who refuses to wear a helmet.

club run today was ridicolously hard

never in my life , i struggled as the pace was really high, doing 25MPH on the flats!

I think my timer on my garmin was still running when we stopped for a coffee, does that affect the average speed? as it seems really low (lower than normal, even tough we where going for it!??)

the "mountain bike" is the generic choice for anyone who doesnt know what they're buying or is spending under £200

Dont mix these people up with mountain bikers.

Gave the Ti a quick wipe down ready for 8 days of abuse :)

Does anyone use a bar mount for their Garmin's? Thinking of getting one but their a bit pricey at £25 +

Club social mince pie ride today, had to turn back three times and re-route due to flooding. It was a tough ride, strong winds.

Unfortunately had two fallers, one from the club who went over his bars and cracked his chin on the pavement when trying to circumnavigate flood water by going on the pavement then slipping back on to the road. He ended up with a bust lip and a nasty looking graze on the chin.

The second faller was hilarious. You can just about make him out coming towards us in the distance in this pic: https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net.../12598_10151167094756428_165259541_n.jpg?dl=1

He decided to try and ride through the flood water and ended up toppling over half way through and completely submerged himself underneath. He couldn't unclip and was wading about. It was quite possibly the funniest thing I've seen this year.

I normally do have sympathy for crashes but he was plain stupid for even attempting it. The water went over his wheels!!
