Whats the Crucial M4 of the moment?

Hi all

When I was looking at SSD drives a while back the M4 was the one to get, is that still the case?

I've put it off but now looking into them again and hoping there may be some form of sales in the new year

840 pro if you can stretch to it.... I don't recommend last gen anymore.

M4 is still very quick, not sure how much difference you would notice between that and other drives. It has been solid, so can't complain on that side.

Exactly, I've had both and really outside of benchmarks you don't notice the difference unless you Raid them. Either get an M4 or pay a bit extra for the 840 Pro just for the fact it is built to last and comes with a 5 year warranty to back that up.

M4 is a great drive. Nothing wrong with it, I have one and will recommend it. Very fast with good firmware support. Comparing it to a Samsung is just splitting hairs.

Well I certainly notice the difference maybe you guys have not done a direct comparison.

I've used the m4s for a couple of years and I found the 840s to be a significant upgrade. In actual fact I have a machine with a pair of m4s in RAID0 and a single 840 still wipes the floor with it

Latest and fastest isn't always best...

I personally went (in 256GB flavour) for a 830 after a toss up between the M4, 830 and 840 Pro.

At the time the 840 Pro was a good £50 more (256GB 830 was £140 inc del).

The 840 non-pro isn't quite as fast as the 830 and yet it is the same price, no brainer there tbh.

m4's as stated are still very good drives, i paid over 230 for mine when i bought the 256gb version not long after they came out, still dont regret it, fast as lightning, and iv filled mine almost, got about 80gb free, i havnt noticed any slowdown at all

OMG What have you been drinking this morning ?

As stated I'm still using the m4s - they are good but going forward I won't recommend them as they'll be going out of date a lot sooner than the 840 pros

Subliminal seems to be talking a bit of crap here.

I also did what the guy above did - had an M4 128gb, wanted 256gb. Went for an 830 over the 840 as it's better, and the 840 Pro is £50 more.

The 830's are proven drives and are pretty much identical to the M4's, they're not going out of date at all, unless you're county warranty, which while is 2 years longer, does not justify 1/3 extra in price and less storage.

LOL ... I'm talking from direct experience from using both the 830s and 840 pros, running real world apps like eclipse, oracle, compilers, j2ee containers and the gap between them is huge.

If you guys just twiddle your thumbs watching boot times then by all means choose the 830

I have 2 X 128Gb M4's running them in RAID and there amazing.

can't fault them and the speeds is awesome.

Only difference would be in benchmarks anything over Sata 2 you can't see anyway as its too fast already.

You have very specialist apps there... so 'real world' is still different for most other people on this forum...

99% of people will not be able to tell the difference between the M4, 830 or 840 Pro. Period. I can't tell the difference between a X25-M 160GB, a 320 300GB and my 830 256GB beyond benchmarks...

I went for the 830 because compare to the M4 simply because they were roughly the same price but anandtechs benches (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/355?vs=532) seemed to be on the whole slightly better.

Recommending people to spend ~£40 more on a device for no noticeable benefit is madness.

840 256GB = £144
830 256GB = £149
M4 256GB = £150
840 Pro 256GB = £191
