I've never bought any of the COD games. Which would be the most active online one nowadays? There are too many to choose from.

I would have to guess at probably the most recent one (Black Ops 2)
COD 4 Modern Warfare is probably the best one but it's fairly old now, still has an active community but I would avoid it.

You could order a disc copy online for cheaper then what Steam are selling it for however

To save some money, try out Tribes:Ascend or Blacklight Retribution. Both F2P and fun.

Is anyone else having troubles logging in? I can log into the website fine, but just downloaded Steam (got a new SSD today) and when I try to log in it says something about an error to connect to the Steam servers. Some people on the Steam forums are reporting the same problem.

Think I will go for this after looking at some gameplay vids, seems like a good alternative to CSS.
