BMW and M Power Owners

Not heavily no, but you can negotiate.

It's more of a throw in a service, recode, balancing, alignment type stuff instead of knock of 2 grand.

I got 1.5k off my x5 in the summer (deal was negotiated by a friend at BMW UK with the dealer and I know was all they had to give in it). When I bought my 5 series a couple of years ago I only managed £500 off

cool - thanks Fox :) - just gives an idea of haggliability

of course though like Skidder has said - it depends on the dealer, the car in question, and how desperate they are to sell etc

It depends what you buy too. I went for a manual version with a beige leather interior which is about as unpopular as you can get 3 Series wise.

I've made a monumental mistake with my E46 330i. I'll undoubtedly get a tirade of being called a 'noob' and so forth but here goes.

A week or two ago I changed the CCV valves as I mentioned on here. The car ran perfectly at idle and went around the block with no issues at all. Got it back, let it cool down while we did some last checks to ensure all hoses were perfect (they were). I checked the oil at teh same time (car had been off for 30 mins at least) and the oil level was barely touching the bottom of the dipstick. Topped up and checked and it was barely moving. Topped up again, same story. Topped up the third time (so I had put in about 1.2 litres) and it finally started to register and had hit the mid point on the dipstick.

Took the car home and about a mile into the journey, it developed a misfire and was skipping when in drive with the foot brake on.

Did some checks, nothing was pointing to the usual issues so I had it compression checked on Xmas eve - cyl 6 is down about 50% compared to the other cylinders. Everything points to a blown valve on that cylinder so it's going to have to be a head rebuild :o

Ironically after it started misfiring, I got it back to the garage (about 3 miles round trip) and the dipstick was reading into the max. Drained just over a litre out and its sat in the middle where it should be.

Moral of the story, don't bugger around with it.

The lad who I sold my 106 rallye to, over filled it with oil and it's down on compression on one cylinder. It's broke a piston ring and knackered all the bore, so a bit worse than a head rebuild unfortunately.

I'm not saying thats what has happened with yours but sounds similar :(

It's a stupid mistake to make really and I still can't believe I managed it considering I knew exactly how to check the oil (leave it for 5 mins after running and then test). I'll be getting a leakdown test done to hopefully point out where the problem is exactly - worst case scenario, new engine and fitting - thankfully the guy I use charges £200 to swap the engines over so it's taken a fair amount of the 'bite' out of the cost.

My final 2 choices are a little odd I guess. The reason being is that I don't really have a budget. When I owned the 535d it was plenty fast for me and I really liked it.

The M3 seems like it would be a lot of fun.
My main problem is not only do I not really know what I want. But I also don't know what my budget is.
Other issue is that I would like to have 5 seats. Although most of the time 4 will be sufficient. Otherwise I would have probably gone for the current M3.
Any suggestions??
Ideally I would want to spend around the 15k mark I think, I probably do a max of 10k miles per year.

M5?

M5 would be awesome, but I would be pushing my budget to be honest. A good example of say an 07 plate E60 would be in the region of £20k right??

Was there anything wrong with the CCV in the first place?

Not 'wrong' as such, it was still doing what it was supposed to but it was pretty caked up in yellow gunge where the oil and water vapors had been mixing. I think this was the cause of the high oil usage so common on M54's.

Car's going for a leakdown test today to identify which bit is broken, I'm hoping it's the head as it'll be a lot cheaper than a full head+block rebuild.

I popped into BMW yesterday to ask about any E39 M5s in their used network. Not many about at all!

He tried to steer me onto the E60s, which start at about 23k-24k. Really don't want one of those, as it's even more to run, and it doesnt have a proper gearbox.

they seem a bit snotty about selling more than one generation ago from what I've seen, more likely to pass them on to someone else if they come in PX
