UK government proposes to block all Internet porn as standard

I don't see the problem if it is truly limited to porn. It's not a blanket ban on porn, if you read the article a bit more even the ***** Mail says that when a new computer is switched on for the first time, it will ask if there are any children in the household. If so, filters will be automatically put in place. This means it's still up to the parents whether they want to say yes or not.

I'm not sure how it's going to work with existing computers. As some of you say, the concern is that this could lead to censorship of other content.

what the hell is wrong with porn???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I'm not sure if I have enough question marks in there

For some people it can be quite damaging. Typically people with low self esteem to begin with.

I don't think porn is actually good for anyone, tho.

But, of course, it isn't.

Firstly, it's not even intended to be truly limited to porn. The main lobbying group is a political-religious organisation and the rest are political organisations with their own agendas. For a start, they want a blanket ban on porn. But that's only the start. This isn't conspiracy babble - they're not hiding what they want. Porn is simply the easiest target, especially for people who are low enough to use children as a political tool.

Secondly, it's impossible to filter the net that finely even if it is the intention. Anyone who has had any experience with internet filtering will know that it's a crudely imprecise blanket. Even David Cameron acknowledged that fact, so at least he's listened to people who have a clue.

For example, there are still many websites that block all references to the town of Scunthorpe. It's still common now, almost 20 years after the debacle with AOL and Scunthorpe that led to the whole issue of ludicrously broken censorship being called "The Scunthorpe Problem". I'm wondering if these forums allow it. I know that some other forums I use block it. We'll find out when I post this.

Even if such obvious errors are somehow avoided (and it's difficult to do so while maintaining effective censorship), there are many others. How, for example, do you program a blanket censorship filter to block all nude pictures and references to body parts or sexual acts without blocking things such as information and support sites for breast cancer? Or for homosexual adolescents?

It simply can't work as stated. Either the statements are lies or they're being made by people who have no understanding of the subject whatsoever.

It's not a blanket ban on porn, if you read the article a bit more even the ***** Mail says that when a new computer is switched on for the first time, it will ask if there are any children in the household. If so, filters will be automatically put in place. This means it's still up to the parents whether they want to say yes or not.

And when it doesn't automagically solve all problems, the most obvious course of action is to make it mandatory...which is what was wanted in the first place and headed off only by public opposition. This time.

I'm not sure how it's going to work with existing computers. As some of you say, the concern is that this could lead to censorship of other content.

Not could. Will. Maybe intentionally, maybe unintentionally, probably both. But it will lead to it.

I ask the question again. People with low self esteem maybe should go near knifes, roofs or bridges.

I think porn is a gateway to knowing that acts like this may be very normal for humans and may allow people not to suppress their feelings.

why not ?
How many adults dont look at porn? how many are sex attackers ?

Most are asian and don't have access to internet. I'd go as far to say that porn would actually keep a rapist indoors as they're so busy jacking they haven't got time to sit in a biffa bin waiting for their target.

Ther are quite a few studies that show the damaging effects of porn. There are links to poor body image, poor sexual satisfaction and increased sexual violence.

Why do I get the feeling these 'studies' were done by coming up with the conclusion first then finding the evidence to support it? Bet they were done by groups with names like "Family Rights America" or something.

I watch a lot of porn, I'm a violent lover and my sex is always unsatisfying, is it because I'm too weedy for girls to enjoy my raw masculinity like God intended?

;)

I'm afraid not. I linked a whole bunch the last time this topic came up as I was doing work avoidance and had access to Athens at the time. Generally university lead studies as most research is.

Can you remember the sample sizes/types that they used?

Like anything, watching porn should be done in moderation. I have a high sex drive but I still think that watching porn should be done the minority of the time otherwise it clouds your view of the 'real' world, especially if you're in a relationship. You should not really think "I want to date girl X in porn" or "I want to date girl Y in porn" because you are purely thinking about the sex, and entering into a relationship with that someone [unless you are the kind who can just opt for a **** buddy] is a different kettle of fish. There are plenty of good-looking people out there that are total idiots who you'd never dream of dating if you got to know them.

However, I also think it's important to watch porn - or at least indulge in erotica - a minimum of the time to keep your sex drive healthy. And because it's fun.
