Thermaltake Frio good enough for 3570K?

I've had a Frio keeping my 2500K at 4.2ghz and 65C or less under load for a couple years now, but I'm migrating the 2500K to my gf's build next week and I must have binned the stock cooler so I have to pick another one up. Here's the dilemma:

Do I:
1. Buy something cheap to keep her 2500k acceptable at 4ghz and continue using the frio for my 3570k, which will have the nuts clocked off of it, and hope it's up to the task.

2. Give her the frio and upgrade at a pretty hefty cost to get the most out of my chip?

I'm leaning towards 1, so what budget cooler would you recommend for a 2500k at 4ghz for around 25-30 quid?

1 x Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £15.98
Total : £64.46 (includes shipping : £8.75).

any of these will be more than enough for a 2500k @ 4ghz. tbh the stock cooler would be sufficient if found.

if you are feeling really tight then

Guess it kinda depends on how much you think your GF is worth and how long you want to keep her. ;)

Vapor 120 & TS120 are about the same. Matterhorn is better.

Zaward Vapor 120 for £19.99 is good. 3x 8mm pipes is same cooling as 4x 6mm pipes.

Thermalright True Spirit 120 for £24.98 is 4x 6mm pipes

Alpenfohn Matterhorn Pure is £29.99 and 6x 6mm pipes.

You can upgrade your new build with
Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E for £51.59 this week

Just in case Devrij's GF is a forum member, here's my HSF if ya know what i mean ;)

I'm pretty sure the 2500k does 4ghz on stock volts, so anything that'll keep it reasonably quiet is fine really. My main concern was whether the hotter 3570k would require a better cooler than the Frio.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Overall I would think that the Frio would work fine but I think that in your situation I'd go for either

A 'treat' the gf to 'the best 'new' 2500k cooler for her 'new' - a frio ' so she has the best package available :) and having given up the best you 'settle' for a new , but not as good( how 'good' is interpreted I leave to your imagination), cooler for the 3570 .

Alternative - mm wanted section. I'm sure that there will be a few people who have spare stock 2500k coolers going.

:D

Hi Devrij,

Unfortunately for Ivy Bridge size will matter, the chip is a lot hotter than Sandy. Go with option 2 and buy yourself a new cooler.

The highest I can get to with a budget cooler(with push and pull) is 4.4 after which the performance of the cooler drops off sharply despite the chip being capable of higher clocks

How budget is your cooler? The frio was mid-high end in its day, so it isn't exactly budget. I admit it isn't top of the range either though.

I'd be interested to see some comparison on heat output between the two chips though.

After some sleep I did a little digging and Frio is 2-5c hotter than NH-D14, Phanteks PH-TC14PE and Silver Arrow. Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme (TY-143 2500rpm fans) is about 10c cooler at same noise level as H100.

The cooler that I was using was a Xigmatek Gaia... In its own right it's a pretty good cooler but I noticed that it falls off a cliff when going for extreme temperatures > 85 (die ~= 72C surface). Blasting it with high velocity fans doesn't help either.

So it comes down to basic physics ie not enough surface area and weight

Silver Arrow . = . 4x 8mm pipes 147x123x160mm 151x149x160mm w/Fans 40.87mm*
SA SB-E . . . .= . . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 170x130x170mm w/ 140mm & 150mm PWM fans 31.9/39/46mm*
*Fin to heatsink face clearance. CPU is approx 7mm above motherboard face.

Old Silver Arrow double towers have 55 fins in 147 x 103 x 42.6mm area with 4x 8mm pipes = 100sq mm / mm length of heatpipe surface area in each tower. Weight: 825g

Silver Arrow SB-E double towers have 63 fins in 154 x 120 x 38mm area with 8x 6mm pipes = 150.7sq mm / mm length of heatpipe surface area in each tower. Weight: 750g

Tower size is overall size so not true area of fins.

So SA SB-E is bigger with more cooling area but weights 75g less than old SA

Cheers that's quite useful info. 10C is quite a big difference, but I'm not sure I can justify 60 quid for that. I think I'll pick up something cheap for the missus and if the frio isnt up to the job I'll just back off the overclock a bit.
