There are far better equiped laptops out there, so what you say doesn't really stand up anymore I'm afraid. 3/4 years ago I would have agreed with you, but I think you'll find other manufacturers have closed the gap. Apple seem to be telling us what we want rather than the other way round.

I'm all for moving on, but the iMac as an all in one should have an optical drive and the rMBP as a pro machine should have ethernet.
 
iMac SHOULD have kept its optical drive, they could have put it at the foot in the centre, just make it thicker.

But having bought the new iMac and a superdrive now, its not big deal I guess having it on the side, just one of those things you live with and actually work out quite well seeing where my desk is to the side wall and the lack of space to the side.

Sorry, seemed like you were trying to tell mrbell1984 that he shouldn't choose Apple products because he thinks they are outstanding and far better than anything else out there. There's no 'proof' that he's wrong as an opinion can't be proven right or wrong.

You like Apple and so does Mr Bell, we can tell that from your posts. The discussion is about the exclusion of optical drives, or opinions as you call them. No one is saying Apple's are all rubbish as that would be as silly as saying there is nothing better than an Apple.

I do wish Apple lovers would stop being hyper sensitve regarding comments or opinions against Apple.
 
I agree that the iMac really should have an optical drive, there was never any need to make it thinner really.

Although when it comes to the rMBP I really don't mind it being missing as much as the Ethernet. Although I have the thunderbolt adapter and carrying it around isn't a hassle at all. The tri prong IE/UK charger head is a pain :p

I also have a slim/laptop Blu-ray drive in my M-ITX system and I have an external dvd writer for a long time now. I can't really remember the last time I used the external drive, and I rarely use the blu-ray drive in my pc.

I consider myself a bit of a pro user considering the amount of visualization, database work, networking and odd bit of multimedia I do and I can honestly say the lack of an optical drive or ethernet port on my rMBP really doesn't bother me at all.

In fact I really enjoy the machine, and the weight reduction alone makes it worth losing the optical drive. Time will tell if leaving my external drive at home all the time is going to be regretted, but so far I've not had any problems

I think the problem was your rebuttal stated that there are better products out there because they are 'far better equipped' and naturally, the hardware spec of a product is only a small part of what makes up an entire product, so that alone isn't relevant to whether something is good or bad. It's the same old, tired, you can buy a better specced machine for less money than a Mac that people keep trotting out over and over. I wish the Apple haters would get over that already!
 
That is my point. I love my mbp, it does everything I need as well as looking and feeling the part. When I bought it there were Windows laptops with better cpu's but I went for another Apple as it had everything I needed and in my opinion worth the extra.

I am no Apple hater, but I do look at their line up subjectively and it doesn't seem to make sense anymore. MB pro's don't seem to be pro specced and the all in ones are not all in one anymore. These are my opinions as an owner of a Apple computer and phones.

I guess that's where we differ then; optical media is going to become less and less relevant so optical drives might as well be made an optional accessory instead of an integral part of the machine. We'd still have floppy drives in our computers if this didn't happen!

Floppy drives were clearly obsolete at that point. Replace by both CD and DVD. Apple have moved away from DVD's a while ago when they started offering OS releases on flash drives only. However, in the case most of the industry still use DVD to supply software, entertainment etc.

I agree that optical media is on the way out but I don't think it will happen as quick as people make out.

PC-based Blu-ray playback is a universally terrible experience consisting of mediocre software with ugly skins and the most restrictive licensing ever, and I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. Even stand-alone players are pretty awful compared to a PlayStation 3.
 
I think people are completely missing the point of Apple. No one is not going to buy an Apple product because it doesn't have a Ethernet port or ODD.

They could include an Ethernet port and an optical drive without increasing the RRP by a single penny; but there's profit to be made here. By removing these things under a guise of bad looks and making people pay extra to have them externally is a brilliant way to extract more money from their easily impressionable and brainwashed user base.

Apple is an extremely interesting company and some of their user base is equally peculiar. If they gave you a slab of concrete, called it "The most radical laptop ever", I'm willing to bet that certain people would still agree that it's the best laptop they've ever used. Okay that's an extreme example. :p

Yeah. I'm just making a point. Apple are known to manipulate, nothing new.

I don't believe for a second that they removed an Ethernet port for better looks or because it's dying out. Who on earth uses their laptop at 90° the wrong angle? and the Ethernet standard is going nowhere.

Goodness me. We'd still have floppy disc drives in Macs/PCs if the OP had his way. Optical media (for macs seeing as they don't support BluRay) is on it's way out. I can't remember I last used a DVD/CD in my mac.
