Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Speedtessts come back with 30meg down and 1.9meg up so that's good. It's midnight and i'm still downloading at 500kbps :( Think I'm gonna call Virgin, I should be downloading closer to 3mbps

EDIT: it's just jumped to 3mbps!? Normally with Alt Binz it downloads at the maximum rate as soon as you click connect but now it steadily speeds up

If a Speedtest is showing 30mbps then your download is slow either because
(1) the traffic is being throttled (only p2p traffic)
(2) the server/uploaders are slower than your download rate
(3) something on your system is limiting the speed

How long does it normally take to get the free double speed upgrade once they have finished upgrading an area as my area was finished end of December but still no upgrade.

There is no set time. If your area has been completed, which you can check with your postcode here, then call Customer Services and ask for your free upgrade.

Had my double speed increase to 60MB from 30MB but don't notice it as I'm connecting over wireless n so won't get anymore than about 35MB, I've tested plugging my laptop via Ethernet and I get about 62MB. Picked up some power line adapters to see if that would improve it and they wouldn't give anymore than 42MB. Looks like I'll have to make do with 35MB!

Changing the channel on the SuperHub might improve the wifi speeds, alternatively you would have to use a separate router and there are much better ones out there.

With Powerline, you're limited based on the adapters themselves as well as your electrical wiring.

Still having lag spikes, seems to be peak times. TBB graph is working again and now looks like this...

I posted something on their forums and they have said "The UBR which handles your connection is currently suffering from very high utilisation, particularly at peak times. This has been raised to our network teams, Work to resolve this issue is currently scheduled to be completed on 13/02/2013 (although this may be subject to change)."

Great, gotta put up with this for around 2 more months, going off that. I'll bet getting reduced service isn't reflected in a reduced monthly fee though.

That is what kept happening to my connection so I used the contract get out clause when they put the prices up.

When it worked it was great but I seemed to get a good couple of months followed by a couple of dire ones!

Call Tech Support on 151 and get the outage logged on your account, they can credit you half* of your broadband costs for the duration of the outage.

*any BB fault that doesn't cause a total loss of service/connectivity = half refunded

One of their reps on the forum has advised to quote the fault reference, once the problem is resolved, to receive an appropriate credit for not receiving the full service.

I'll still call in and log it tomorrow anyway methinks. Cheers.

Best to call and get it logged, only way to ensure credit for the full duration of the fault.

I would be surprised if they ever fix this tbh. Mines been going on for a year now tbh

FTTC not available until sometime later this year so I'm stuck with Virgin for now. Most of the time it's been ok, just these last couple of weeks that it's got bad.

Download speeds/upload speeds are always great. Just the latency that's bad, and when you play a lot of online games it gets very frustrating.

Yes :) Do I have to ring them? Can I not do it online? Are there any possible problems when doubling the speed, like could it become less reliable?

Had a little look around my account page on the site and couldn't see anything. They have to manually do it on their end. I rang the 0845 454 1111 number and followed the options. Spoke to a woman who then passed me onto someone from their broadband customer services team. They then put me on hold for 2-3 minutes while they upgraded me - 20 minutes later the internet reset and my speed was upgraded.

I'm on 30Meg L package, had it for 2 months can I ring up and get it doubled too?

Suspect that if you're on L and are getting 30Mb then you've already had your speed "doubled" (though for L think it was actually trippled from 10Mb). I'm on XL and was doubled to 60Mb (though in my case as I didn't go for a SuperHub until this upgrade I was actually also "tripled" as I was previously still on the old 20Mb XL speed).

Looking at the VM website then they seem to have dropped all the L, XL, XXL names now for broadband and I'm now on "Broadband 60"!

Well if it helps, i've just upgraded with Virgin Media.

Was on 20mb (10mb before the speed upgrade) L ( Free Evening & Weekends) and M+ package for £28.50

Now 30Mb and Free evening & weekends for £23.75.
Yes dont have the tv package. But can live with out it me. Infact i've not turned the tv box on for a few good months. So a few quid saving and a extra 10mb. I'm happy with that.
