Since there have been a few posts in the 2012 thread in the last few days, I thought I'd start a 2013 thread.

I successfully grew some Cayenne chillis last year so I'm hoping to expand on that with a few different varieties. I also managed to grow some herbs (parsley, coriander, thyme and rosemary). These successes have inspired me to branch out a bit this year so I'm aiming to grow some veggies. I don't have a garden. My back yard is concrete and paving slabs and there is only one corner that gets any decent amount of sun. I will not let this deter me. I intend growing some basic veg in pots and grow bags and add sage, basil and dill to my herbs.

I'm looking forward to the challenge :)
 
Whisky barrels would be awesome for growing tatties in :D Wonder where one could pick some up :p
 
There are quite a lot on ebay, some already converted to planters. A lot want local pickup only though. Might be worth a look.
 
Homegrown veg is great, we grow spuds, cabbage (curly kale, savoy, minicole), carrots, parsnip, beetroot, peas, radish, lettuce, sprouts, leeks, spring onions, onions, french beans, turnip, swede, strawberries, gooseberries. That's all i can remember off the top of my head. It provides about 90% of our yearly veg.

Ooh. Forgot about curly kale. Must add that to the list :cool:
 
Currently building 10sqm of raised bed in the polytunnel. Going big on tomatoes this year, particularly San Marzano variety. Will probably do a long gutter of strawbs. Chillis for jam but haven't decided on the rest.

Cleared my plot ready for this year. :cool:

Bit with the black liner has been done as well now.

I'm a big tatty grower & haven't worked out which ones I'm going to try this year.
Heavy strawberry field down the bottom.
Peas/Runner beans/Butternut/Brussels/cabbage/lettuce/turnips/carrotts/onions/challottes & anything else I can fit in. :cool:

GET OFFFFF MY LAND !!!
 
Flipping heck 4T5. Does this mean I've got to get myself sorted now then?

Dig the final lot of parsnips up.
Dig the plot over.
Add some organic matter.
Sort out what I want to grow.
And get my seeds ordered.

That's pretty impressive 4T5.

How big is your garden? And do you move crops around each year? I.e. to get the best nutrients put back into the ground from beans etc (afaik don't they put one of either N, P or K back into the soil?)
 
This year I'm planning on growing taters, tomato's, beans, courgette, sweetcorn, lettuce, herbs, beetroot, carrot, onion, leek, strawberries, blackcurrants, rhubarb and loads of other bits a pieces.
 
So this is how I'm looking at the moment.



Parsnips and Leeks are still in there and need eating soon ish.

Courgettes, tomatoes, parsnips, leeks, beans, onions, strawberrys, potatoes are all on the to grow list. I tried carrots last year but they were a disaster! May give them another shot.
 
Cheers All but that's not my garden it's my allotment plot, This will be my 3rd year. I am rotating crops but I haven't to many worrys this year as last year was such a washout.

As in growing them in a length of guttering? That's quite a splendid idea.

Loads. Basil is a great one, releases a huge cloud of aroma with just a little ruffle of the leaves. It's supposed to deter flies as well, if you get any issue with them in the summer. Thyme is one of my favourite herbs and you can keep it quite small in a pot. Smells fantastic as well. Sage, rosemary, chives, parsley, coriander, all will grow in pots - though the rosemary & sage won;t like it much after a few years. Oh and mint.

Different herbs like different conditions so have a read up on them and water with care. Mediterranean herbs like dryer, free draining soil so mix a bit of grit in with the compost. And remember that leafy herbs will put on more leaf in shadier conditions.
