Windows Live Messenger shutting down :(

I use messenger for checking mail and talking to someone almost everyday. I prefer to have my messenger box as a small size in the bottom corner of my screen so i can continue doing other things while chatting.

Skype just insists on being a huge blot on my screen by forcing the contact bar being part of my chat window. I also couldn't figure out how to send files (although this seems to be just because my contact wasn't on skype and was on standard wlm) or change the color of text from standard black. Also it seems i cant auto-log in with my microsoft account and need to always type in my email/password, but worst of all skype likes to randomly crash every now and then. I HATE IT!!

TBH FB messenger is probably the best all round solution to messaging. When I upgraded to windows 8 the built in FB chat function was a nice little addition. Sure I could have installed an FB program before but the nice part about it is that you don't have to have any program loaded or chat window anywhere and it will just let you know when someone has messaged you, no fuss.

The best feature is that most people have facebook somewhere so you can reach most people wherever they are or on whatever device.

Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect, but the best sure-fire way of getting in contact.

A cross platform messenger like Facebook is really good yeah, I know that if I get a solo/group message with media attached that it can be viewed if I'm at my work desk, home desk or on the move on my phone. you can't do that with MSN without a lot of faff. The Android MSN clients are extremely poor as it is with the official one taking AGES to simply log in.

The way forward is FB/WhatsApp as far as cross platform goes.

I use Windows Live Messenger for Remote Assistance, does anyone know if Skype has this facility built into it?

Although I use pidgin today and not the WLM client (Used to use a hacked version of the wlm), it works and has worked for what is almost over a decade(?) without issue once, ever, EVER.

I hate disparity in IM Clients or accounts, it just means you have to create more accounts, thankfully pidgin exists for centrality.

Though thankfully it's really rare to the point of non existance that I meet people that only use FB chat or Google or some relatively new system that have no reason other than to have their own.

I've used Trillian for the last couple of years for my IM needs. Never really liked the WLM interface anyway, especially with all the social network integration, and wasn't overly fussed about the Skype interface either. Using Trillian (or other similar apps) meant I only needed one client installed.

I did merge my WLM and Skype account a while ago, not that it mattered much to me as I had pretty much the same people on both networks ;)

You could just use Microsoft lync?

We use it at work now, it replaced MSN completely as the work 'chat' client. And also allow VoIP calls to normal phone numbers.

The only person I really see logged in on my MSN with any sort of regularity is Jokester :p

It's been a good couple of years since I've used it frequently or extensively.

I'll miss it in terms of nostalga perhaps, but I won't really be effected as everyone I talk to moved away from it.

I'm not on facebook and use MSN to stay in contact with most of my nearest and dearest. Are the days of the independent chat client truly over, are they all going to have to bend over for the inevitable onslaught of the Facebook horde? Tune in next week to find out.

I used to use WLM years back, then all my friends moved to Facebook.
All updates of WLM did however make it worse with all those stupid adverts and pop ups!
