Windows Live Messenger shutting down :(

Then might I suggest Trillian? You can amalgamate several chat clients into the window and configure them to look essentially exactly as you want. As an example here are two chat windows from MSN and Skype on my computer:

As you can see I have an MSN and Skype conversation open here, and its nice, neat and tidy :).

Been using Trillian for a year or two now. If you don't pay for it, you do get the occasional advert, but I just added a keyword block rule in my router for /ad/v2/win/ and that stopped the ads.

Steam chat only for me these days for computer type friends and telephone/text for non computer friends. Messenger looked very sad/empty/depressing place last time I logged in about 3 years ago!

Why won't you use facebook?

You don't have to post anything on it, you can just treat it as a instant messenger and nothing more.

To be fair even if his Facebook account was full of his friends explaining what works of Shakespeare they'd read today it's still not a credible MSN alternative - its web based for a start, MSN is a standalone application.

You can use XMPP clients for Facebook chat like Adium/Pidgin.

I used MSN chat for a long time probably 2001 - 2007/8. Not used it since then though so won't particularly miss it.

I remember the early versions having a much more accessible API that made it very easy to write Trojans that took commands via msn chats. Hours of fun to be had there until they locked it down :p

Got an email through today from Microsoft to say that MSN gets shut down on the 15th of March at which point MSN/WLM clients will no longer sign in :(

This REALLY sucks, MSN is still the worlds most popular chat software so to use an analogy its like shooting yourself in the foot when your winning the race in the hope your teammate can then pickup the win.

We all knew this was comming when MS bought Skype but I would have expected them to wait until Skype had been brought up to MSN's level before they killed MSN off, I guess they got impatient due to how slowly Skype was taking market share from MSN but IMO that should have told them something.

How many people will this force to competitors software? hell Apple have iMessage/facetime on OSX and IOS, all they need to do is write Windows versions and *bam* checkmate, RIP Skype >.>

MSN became nearly as bad as realplayer for adverts and bloat, so I like many people switched to skype

Really depressing when they got bought by MS, im expecting that microsoft will try to pull the same trick with skype and in 2-3 years it'll be just as bad as they progressively add more crap to it, then ill be looking for another alternative, rinse repeat

Does Skype have a group chat system similar to MSN groups? Not one you have to add people to every time they sign on, one where you can just join the group chat if you want.
