Around 2K?

Go and drive both of them. The biggest difference is driving dynamics - the signum is pretty poor and the Mondeo is especially good. But the signum will probably give you something newer and higher specced for the money - so entirely depends what's important to you.

Just don't buy a diesel, it will cost you more in the long run!

Have driven a few Mondeo's but not a Signum. Guess I need to. I agree you tend to get more car with the Signum. Will not be looking at the diesels then :)

If you're after handling then it might disappoint, otherwise it's ok.

I'm going to play "reccomend your own car" here - but if handling isn't a concern then how about a Saab? 2k buys a nice 93 or 95, decent levels of kit, supreme comfort, smooth and robust turbo petrol engines which return sensible mpg...

No too sure about the Saab choice, can't quite come to the idea of image! Been 26 they seem something my Dad would buy! Rubbish and a totally bizarre mindset I know! Plus the interior looks very stange. Have not driven one so only going on looks. Guess I should test drive one??

Also there are quite a few VW Passats with the 1.8t engine. These seem ok?

Again it's a confusing viewpoint - you're looking at a signum!

If they don't appeal they don't appeal, but they do what the signum does (be a lot of car for the money at the compromise of handling), arguably they do it better.

I'm 27 and I'm on my second Saab (both 93s) and they generated way more "nice car!" Comments than anything else I've owned. Passats are nice enough, think there's a few things to watch out for on the 1.8t so best research first

I know, its like a Volvo. I have the idea they are a car for the older genaration. Strange but thats me. Guess the Signum to me seems a little bit more 'cool' Ahhh I have no idea what the heck I am talking about!!!! :D

Had too many small cars, fancy something a bit 'grown up' not too 'grown up' if that makes sense too!!

If it's image you're bothered about, there's no way in hell anyone will think you're cool in a signum! The 9-3 is a bit "cooler" than the 9-5 but smaller - there's an 07 reg estate on autotrader for 2495 at the moment though!

Saabs are hard to ignore, and even though I think they're pretty dull, they're a far better proposition than a Signum imo.

I mentioned a Saab and a Volvo to the GF and she just laughed!! :p No doubt they are a very good cars, its just not me. I'm not sure its all about image but it has to play a part. A Saab is just not a car I can look at and like. I used the word Cooler in jest. I know a signum is not cool! Far from it, but to me it does not have the image a Saab has? The newer models looks very nice.

Hope all that makes sense.

Errr you are looking to buy a large hatch/saloon for under 2k that is reasonably cheap to run. Whilst in an ideal world image might matter you are not buying into the world of desirable cars and to most people all this stuff has the same image. Ie non whatsoever.

Sounds like you just need to go out and look at / drive a few of these cars then pick what you like best. At the end of the day if you pick a straight petrol motor at £2k you wont go far wrong, if you hate it just sell it on.

I bought a 2006 1.8 mondeo last year for a family member for around £1600, it has no proper history, yes it's slow but it's a clean car, no rattles or squeaks, pretty economical and has been faultless so far needing only a new set of tyres which you won't avoid no matter what.

I'm not suggesting you go out and buy a Mondeo without history just because it's cheap but you will get a hell of a lot of car for the money by looking at say a 2 litre car - as has been mentioned by others they're also much more of a drivers car than a signum.

Slight wildcard and a bit smaller but could a 2.3 V5 toledo be of interest? Good car with a nice engine note for not a lot of money - you might even be able to find a 1.8t which will give a little more economy at the expense of potentially silly issues to sort out (will keep you busy, generally not expensive to sort)

I am only posting my mind, to me a Volvo and Saab are not my cup of tea. I don't want to turn this thread into something I did not intend.

I am going to go with a Signum I think. The 2.2 Direct varient. Probally going to be the Design trim. May keep looking at a few Mondeo's and Passat's before I purchase one at the end of the month. Is it only the Gear X which has the leater seats on the Mondeo??

Number one fail = Signum

Number two fail = Diesel

Number three fail = Posting a thread for advice, and disregarding all advice.

Seemed pedantic to point it out but it's important if you're searching!

If you ignore the special editions there aren't that many - aim for something with ghia or titanium in the name if you want spec and you won't go far wrong. Remember some may have leather added as an option or even retrofitted

Go away idiot. I am taking in advice, I do not want a Saab nor a Volvo. I picked 3 cars for a reason. A Signum, mondeo and a VW Passat. I was also looking at diesel but got told they have there problems so going to get a petrol. I may well end up getting a Mondeo, I don't 100% know hence this thread. People posting different cars I am taking there views and looking at them on Auto Trader but do not like them!

Please go away.

Judging whether you like a totally mainstream 2k car based purely on pictures would seem to be quite short sighted. Surely you need to actually go and look at these cars? You are buying a cheap ex fleet car, aesthetics matter but not as much as a myriad of other more important factors you cannot judge from pictures on auto trader.

At 2 grand your priorities should be reliability, ease of fixing, cost of parts, fitness for purpose, equipment levels, tyre costs etc. You seem to think how it looks is all that matters, which if you were shopping for a sports car I might get but... You are looking at old Vauxhalls!
