Yuck, what manky weather, and it's just getting worse. I might drive in if it's this cold and miserable tomorrow. That said, I only spotted one driver being a moron and only one light jumper on the work. In this weather. And it's Monday. Something ain't right

one idiot in a clio was taking the pee.. driving inches away.. beeping etc.. and then he got stuck in traffic and i overtook him with :( face while pointing at him... what is up with the hate towards each other these days.. :o

How does Apex perform? I've only used Rival and Force but it looks decent for the money.

It's alright.

It's my first time with the shifters. The ergonomics and mechanism are identical across Apex, Rival and Force, the only difference is the materials.

On the Scott I've got a full Force group and the Burls has Apex with Force shifters and Shimano long drop brakes (for guards).

The left shifter seems a bit 'clacky' if that makes sense, but I've not properly set up the shifting yet so I'll see what happens.

So far Apex hasn't let me down and hasn't needed much in the way of maintenance despite a lot of commuting miles.

I think it's excellent value for money.

Hey Pete, here's that video I mentioned of me climbing the rake. It doesn't capture the full descent first though. I forgot to start the camera before I headed down. Nothing majorly exciting but a good test of my new camera.

For anyone that doesn't know the area, it's this segment. That last 3rd or so was a bitch. Ignore the wheezing 70 year old man I sound like I had on the back of my bike. That wasn't me, honest...

Dunno. I stated picking up bits for it back in August for a completely different build I was planning. What I can remember is:

Frame and fork: £450
TSP CX8.4 Mini-Vs: £90
Apex front mech: £30
Apex long rear mech: £50
Apex shifters: £190
105 hubs: £70
Kinlin ADHC rims: £30
Spokes: £40ish
12-27 Cassette: £40
Jagwire cable set: £20
FSA omega compact bars: £35
FSA K Lite Seatpost: £90
Fizik Arione: £50
3T Arx Pro Stem: £30
Apex crankset 170mm 34/50 (need some CX rings): £100
DSP Lizardskin tape: £25
Challenge Grifo XS tyres: £80 (I've also got Kenda Small blocks and Marathon Winters to go on).
Hope GXP adapted BB: £30

So that about £1500 all in. Not bad.

Oh, also £85 for Crank Bros Candy 3s. In red, natch.

Also Garmin bar-fly, Exposure Strada mount and Hope district 3 mount.

Currently looking at an FSA k-light bottle cage, but I think £65 is pushing it.....

Woah, thats a pretty serious climb! nice work mate

Thanks. I got 1st place in the 200lb+ weight category which I'm happy with, especially it being the first time I'd climbed it. Doing the rest of the 62mile ride I did was tough after that though. I did get some footage of the rest too but it was pretty foggy and I had condensation on the lens for most of it so it's not worth uploading.

Mine's a Contour Roam with the helmet mount. There's the roam 2 that does 60fps recording but the one I've got seems good enough without spending extra.

So I managed to break my seat-post clamp bolt yesterday when re-setting my seat post prior to a ride (I find my seatpost always slides down slowly over time, so ~1cm in 25 miles or so of riding), anyway new one ordered but gave me the choice of driving or using the mountain bike (for the first time) this morning. Picked the mountain bike, damn it's slow, working harder and going slow is just no fun.

One thing I did find was the shifting was sooo much smoother, the mtb has SRAM X-9/x-7 stuff iirc (bought towards the end of last year), the road bike is from 2008 (but didn't get much use for 4 years :p) and is Tiagra derailleurs/FSA chainset. Not sure it's really worth an upgrade but out of curiosity what is it that would affect this most, the derailleurs or cassette/chainrings/chain?

Guys, stop giving the poor man false information. We all know that the following is the only way to cure common bike problems:

Improper Shifting - New Bike
Uncomfortable Saddle - New Bike
Buckled Wheel - New Bike
Something Keeps Clicking - New Bike
Something Creaking - New Bike
Bike's Dirty - New Bike
GF/Wife is leaving because of bike obsession - 2 New Bikes

Wasn't expecting such a thorough breakdown, cheers :)

Makes me wan't a CX even more even though I would only ride it on the road :p

Just ordered my Ultegra groupset from bike-discount so should be almost ready to start building when my frame arrives, anyone know what specialist tools ill need to start the build? i don't have to put the cassette on, so apart from spanners etc it would just be a bottom bracket spanner? if so ill probably take it just take it to the LBS

Chain/cassette probably have some wear but I wouldn't have thought too much, it's done approximately 1000km, with just an 'ok' amount of maintenence...

Cable wise not been replaced, but although it's old it's been stored inside for the entire time, only done the above mileage and 90% of that was dry riding.

It's not that the shifting is bad as such, it shifts when I want/need it do, just that the mtb was quite a bit smoother shifting if that makes sense?

The new bike idea might work, do want me a CX bike :p
