Just ordered my Ultegra groupset from bike-discount so should be almost ready to start building when my frame arrives, anyone know what specialist tools ill need to start the build? i don't have to put the cassette on, so apart from spanners etc it would just be a bottom bracket spanner? if so ill probably take it just take it to the LBS

Cable cutters are useful, especially for cutting cable outers without harming the cable run.

Chain/cassette probably have some wear but I wouldn't have thought too much, it's done approximately 1000km, with just an 'ok' amount of maintenence...

Cable wise not been replaced, but although it's old it's been stored inside for the entire time, only done the above mileage and 90% of that was dry riding.

It's not that the shifting is bad as such, it shifts when I want/need it do, just that the mtb was quite a bit smoother shifting if that makes sense?

The new bike idea might work, do want me a CX bike :p

Maybe dodgy old springs in the derailleurs if it's been left a few years.

Solution is definitely a new bike :D

Might need to get the headset pressed in as well, depends on the frame.

I picked up an IceToolz kit which covers all the Hollowtech bases and most of SRAM. Can be found for around £35ish online.

I have the same kit, it's very handy.

Also just realised that you'll need a chain tool as well if you dont already have one.

So I managed to break my seat-post clamp bolt yesterday when re-setting my seat post prior to a ride (I find my seatpost always slides down slowly over time, so ~1cm in 25 miles or so of riding)
That doesn't sound right. Are you sure you've got the right size seat post in there? Even 0.2mm too small and it'll slip (e.g. 27.0 in a 27.2 hole).

Hey Pete, here's that video I mentioned of me climbing the rake. It doesn't capture the full descent first though. I forgot to start the camera before I headed down. Nothing majorly exciting but a good test of my new camera.

For anyone that doesn't know the area, it's this segment. That last 3rd or so was a bitch. Ignore the wheezing 70 year old man I sound like I had on the back of my bike. That wasn't me, honest...

Just watched this. Good work! You were really wheezing at some points! When I tried it I got as far as the house you pass at 5:40. I got off for a rest, but when I started again I couldn't get going so had to walk the rest of the way. Tough stuff!

Damn hail hurts!! Especially with the wind making it blow straight it your face. :(

I dread to think... Riding in the snow yesterday was painful enough. I was going slowly partly for fear of slipping, partly for worrying my newly fixed brake might not be so fixed, and partly to mitigate the pain in my face!

It's like being poked a thousand times a second from every conceivable angle some of it tickles mostly it just hurts. Enjoy :D

Just committed to cycling the Isle of Arran a week on Saturday. I've only been cycling a couple of weeks, albeit with a pretty good base fitness from running, but I think the 60 miles is going to be absolutely brutal! Legs will be ablaze.

Is there a reason you're riding on the wrong side of the road around 6 mins?

Yeah, the asthma was definitely playing up coming up that. My inhaler got a battering when I got to the top. That's going to be my regular go to hill now instead of Moor Rd. I'm going to aim to do it at least twice a month.

Do you fancy that Rochdale sportive I mentioned? Reckon the Mrs will give you the morning off on the 27th?

That hill vid, well done! i dont think there is a hill like that in all of Norfolk!!!

Thanks :)

Nice one - should be fun. I lived there til i was about 10 and been back a few times to cycle.

Are you just doing the circumference or planning to cut across either the String or Ross roads through the middle? Some good climbing to be had on both.

If you're just going round the coast, just make sure and pick the right direction depending on the wind when you get there. The west coast is pretty exposed and into a head wind can be quite tough. If you go left towards lamlash when you get off the boat, the road is v undulating for the whole south section of the island. Once you get to the west coast and Blackwaterfoot though it's all flat back round to Brodick apart from one big climb out of Lochranza.

Me and some mates did it in May last year and had a great day of it. You can check out the route profile here:

Would be interested to see how fast i'd get round it now - that was on my old hybrid bike before i even had a road bike or did any training.
