AMAZING NEWS: Blockbusters....

That is another empty building for an hairdressers, Sam/Raj/Jason/Timmy's Fried Chicken outlet to plug into. Basically any business that supermarkets or online stores cannot break into.

There used to be one in my town but that closed down like 5yrs ago. On demand video is where its at now as everyone has said.

Gutted. I used to use my local blockbuster a lot for games as their prices were very cheap. Now there is no where in town where I can buy blurays and DVDs from.

People still rent discs? Really?

Yep, at least you know what you get.. tbh I've used Virgins FilmFlex for HD films at they are poor sound quality and have had to pause the film for at least 10 minutes to give it time to buffer. They are not cheap either... £5.99 a shot i think .. In comparison, you can get 4 Blu-Rays for 4 night for a £10.. Was a bargain really. The problem was it was probably too good a deal because it meant i was only going once every 3 months. 2 films for 3 nights for £10 would have made more sense for the business as it mean there a chance i can return sooner rather than wait for the film list to replenish.

From what seems to be going on these last few weeks, if video killed the radio star, then internet certainly killed the high street shop :(

Poor old Bob Holness will be spinning in his grave. I can almost hear his haunting lament from Baker Street wafting over the ether.

Bugger for the staff tho. Deffo not a good time to be in retail.

They made sales of 2.9 Billion last year and find it hard to believe they make little to zero profit.

Just because you do not believe me doesn't mean I'm wrong.

Investors, comforted by Bezos’s consistency with this strategy over the years, have so much faith in him that they’re willing to tolerate razor-thin or nonexistent profits in exchange for continued market share gains and a promise of windfall profits someday.

On demand is ok but its no use when you on an airplane or fast moving trains

Someone is missing a trick in not selling dvds, tv shows box sets whatever digitally and letting us use the media on various devices. FOR AN AFFORDABLE AND REASONABLE PRICE!

I would happily pay a monthly subscription to the likes of FOX, WB, CBS on the condition that i own what i download and can use it where i want

Until they offer the same as the pirating alternatives sales are only going to continue to flop. This wouldn't save the likes of Blockbuster though they should have moved online a long time ago

On that I agree with you. We are all to blame to an extent but I still clothes shop in the high street, buy meat from a local butchers and buy my veg from a farm. It does cost a little more but it is a way for me and my Wife to spend a bit of time together away from computers/TV's.

There won't be anything left at this rate.

High streets to be awash with semi-feral husbands
UNRULY abandoned men could become a fixture on the high street as music, technology and DVD shops collapse.

They will find things on the floor and gnaw at them
As HMV entered administration shortly after the failure of shops selling computers and cameras, experts fear there will soon be nothing in towns for men.

The Internet didn't kill anything - by in large it is people who do, with their wallets.

Although I understand what you say, I disagree :p The internet has offered an alternative method of how and where we spend our money with added convenience and choice.. High street retail was always going to be the looser in this match. I can't see how retail shops will ever recover because there just isn't the opportunity to make it worth while anymore. I am just as guilty for this culture of online shopping as anyone and i doubt our habits will change.

First Jessops, now HMV -- two iconic chains forced to call in the administrators in 2013. The British high street is facing unrelenting pressure from huge online retailers like Amazon undercutting prices -- and it's endangering many UK high street businesses.

We run the Kenilworth and Warwick bookshops, independent shops which have been a proud part of our local high street for many years. It's always going to be tough to compete with online retailers but what’s even worse is that Amazon, despite making sales of £2.9 billion in the UK last year, does not pay any UK corporation tax on the profits from those sales.

In our book, that is not a level playing field and leaves independent retailers like us struggling to compete just because we do the right thing.

That's why we've started a petition on Change.org calling on Amazon to pay their corporation tax in the UK. Click here to join us.

All Amazon UK book sales are routed through its Luxembourg subsidiary. So when the British public buy goods from Amazon, they are in fact paying a Luxembourg company.

This means Amazon can avoid paying British corporation tax on the profits it makes. Tax experts say if Amazon's total UK sales profits were not funnelled to Luxembourg, it could be paying as much as £100m a year in British corporation tax.

As Independent booksellers, we are happy with competition in the market but believe it should be on level terms and by dodging corporation tax in this way, Amazon start with an unfair advantage.

As they grow bigger it’s inevitable that shops like ours will be under even more pressure. That’s bad for customers, bad for the high street and bad for the UK.

Amazon may be obeying the letter of the law - but they’re certainly not being fair. In December Starbucks announced that they had caved to public pressure and would look at their tax affairs in the UK. It’s time that Amazon did the same.

David Cameron has said we need a national debate about what is unacceptable in terms of tax avoidance. Let's show politicians the strength of feeling in the UK about Amazon's tax affairs. We pay our taxes and so should they -- please take a stand with us and tell Amazon to pay their fair share.

Thank you for your support,

Frances and Keith

^ It may be harsh and it may be wrong but your average Joe just doesn't care enough to do anything about that.

They click, amazon deliver, customer happy

Besides say they do make amazon pay the tax, they will just raise the prices slightly and still be cheaper. Its not like there is much competition left for them and worryingly they could soon be in a position to charge whatever they want, ripping us off all over again

If it were me i'd close those shops now, you are just delaying the inevitable and fighting a losing battle. If amazon dont take you out the kindle, e-reader and ipads will. Just a matter of time. Its easy to say and who know what they would do with their life, but the future is not in an independent book store

I am sick and tired of hearing about "Oh the big bad XXX don't pay UK tax, we do" blah blah.

And politicians having a debate about what is fair with regards tax? That should be a laugh in itself.

Is Redbox in the UK yet?
Absolutely awesome!
