Post office gave wrong amount for currency exchange

I had a feeling it would go down this road. I spoke to my manager at work and he suggested that they would probably get the police involved considering the money involved.

A lot of incompetent post office managers from the sounds of this thread.

Involving the police in this situation is just going to cost the post office more money from legal costs, and the inevitable damaging article in the newspaper about how the post office falsely accused it's customers of theft and sent threatening letters.

get the police involved? because they accidentally bought currency at the offer rather than the bid....?

I guess next time some trader in the city has a fat finger error maybe the bank he works for can simply threaten the counterparty to the trade with the police... and demand they pay it back because silly trader pressed the wrong button.

Can't see how this is too different... so some bint pressed the wrong button/read the wrong rate/whatever.... they ended up buying at the price they'd usually sell at etc.. if they've agreed to the rate, settled the transaction I'm really not sure what they can do other than ask nicely...

I think getting legal advice was the right thing to do. If it were me I'd be writing a formal complaint to Post Office HQ, but taking advice from the CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) or your lawyer is probably the right thing to do from here on out.

I appreciate that the Post Office are using strong arm tactics but your friend was not simply the beneficiary of recieveing an extra fiver. I'm not sure how soon after the mistake was made that your friend was approached by the staff member but you are talking about a mistake of over a thousand pounds so it is not surprising that they want their money back.

Being no worse off is really not getting bent over. The whole thing has become an issue because your friend has let this drag out.

Sorry, I've a quick recheck of the thread and can't see why she would be worse off than she was before but I may simply be missing the post. What is the reason for that?

Will the manager not accept a simple reversal of the transaction, so both parties receive the exact same amount of appropriate currency, returning them both to the state they were in before the transaction took place? Has your friend even suggested that in writing yet?

Has this matter been brought to the attention of head office, too?

I think the point is that the rate has since worsened therefore the opportunity to benefit from the 1.24 rate has gone given it is now 1.28 to the £ to buy. Had the friend accepted a mistake was made and sorted this out on the day I'm guessing this may not have happened.

No PO simply has terrible rate. Rate has actually improved
As was said reverse transactition is good but taking such large amount in cash from bank seems not feasable

If she's getting as stressed about the whole situation as you say she is, it's worth the effort just to get it over with, no?

Then, while going through said reversal she can inform the manager of her intentions to speak to the local press about his attitude and subsequent "customer service".

Well, latest update, looks like the customer is going to get bent over again.

The letter that my friend sent made the manger offer a better rate still 5 cents higher than she could have gotten in a different place.

He now says if she chooses to do nothing then the clerk will go on tribunal and my friend's name will be circulating in the case. As a foreigner she is afraid it will smear her image when she is applying for citizenship.

As far as I know I don't think they can use customer's name when putting the clerk on trial it all seems like a bunch of threats, bluff just like police involvement, so now she is scared from all of these and just wants it all over.

I am very enraged currently :mad::mad:

erm... just ignore the letter... I don't think they do a search for any information they can find on every immigrant to the uk... and even if they did, who cares if someones name is related to an employment tribunal concerning someone else?

as for the manager and the clerk - the alleged error has been made whether your friend agrees to anything anyway - if they think the clerk needs to be disciplined then whether the money gets handed back or not is irrelevant, the mistake was still made

they've got no leg to stand on and taking the threatening approach is the wrong way to go about it... if anything that would make someone very quickly lose any empathy they might have had for their pov...

Roth numbers. Best rate she got over phone 1.24
PO makes mistake and gives 1.17 over phone, she comes over changes money puts in bank about 4-6hours later clerk comes over to her house to alert of mistake.
Now manager demands she gives difference back, best offer he can give 1.285

So you see if clerk did not make mistake she spends on time or nerves on manager
Essentially their mistake is forcing her into a worse rate

manager can demand whatever he likes - tis irrelevant, he's got no leg to stand on, if she chooses to pay him an amount of money back then she is the one in the position to deem how much that amount is

if your friend is feeling bad about the situation, she could perhaps transfer the difference between the erroneous 1.17 rate and the 1.24 rate she'd have got elsewhere (and minus some sum for the wasted time going back and forth to the post office) she'd otherwise have gone with.... tis completely up to her... I'd probably do that if it was a franchise/owner operated post office as I wouldn't want a small business owner to take a huge hit - I'd get some legal advice her as she prob doesn't want to admit any form of liability but rather if just making a donation off her own back

there is no way she should pay the 1.28 rate though as she presumably wouldn't have even made the transaction in the first place if they'd quoted her that rate initially

The clerk will go to tribunal now whatever happens because the mistake has been made.

The tribunal will have no interest in your friend or their name, they will be seeking to establish whether the clerk has done wrong.

There is no way to connect this clerks employment tribunal with your friend, who won't be involved in it, and it certainly wouldn't affect their immigration status.

I can't fathom why your friend is still engaging these people in conversation, I appreciate that this is stressing them out but the PO haven't got a leg to stand on.

I imagine the manager is playing hardball because his neck is on the line as well due to the size of the payment.

Indeed. I would just ignore any future communication from the post office. Reply once stating "With regard to the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, I request that you cease communication with me." OWTTE.
