Recently started working at a new place temporarily just to fill time til I find something I'd actually "enjoy". It's a very big company "that goes boom" (work it out :p )

I was very much under the impression that it was going to be atleast £7.20 based on when a job says "£6.19 - £7.77 per hour" it's usually the 9am-5pm shift that gets the lower end of that..

I work 3pm til 12am. (9 hours).

Got my timesheet and found out I get paid 7 hours at £6.19 and 1 hour at £7.20 (as 1 hour is unpaid lunch)

Is it me or is this taking the **** ?

Did'nt you ask what the rate was? did you not read the contract?

Doesn't sound far off to be honest. I think your lucky you got any extra at all.

Where I work is a shift allowance system. Standard rate for any shift starting before 2pm. 10% Allowance for starting at or after 2pm. 30% starting at or after 10pm but before 6am. If I did 8 hours from 9pm, I would only ever see 10%. But then anything after 8 hours is time and a half.

Be thankful you even have a job lol.

Ask about some sort of shift allowance for working unsociable hours?

Re-read your contract if you haven't already done so.

Usually at the end of any interview they will ask you whether you have any questions.... my generic response is, how do you find your job and what will I be paid :p

No, I didn't ask, as in the contract it says "£6.19 - £7.77 per hour". I assumed my shift, 3pm-12am, would be in the £7+ p/hour.

My logic would indicate that the day shift would get the £6.19, then the "unsociable hours" shift would be getting the £7+ p/hour, with night shift getting the full (or somewhat near) £7.77.

Just seems to me like a dodgy way to advertise a job at a higher pay rate and then not actually pay you that rate for the entire shift.

It depends where you're working I guess, but some places that upper limit will be reserved for potential employees with previous experience, though it would be something discussed beforehand in the interview.

It sucks I know, but just remember to always ask any details and read the contract before signing.

Not quite sure the title is right, it's not dodgy pay, you accepted a job didn't ask the rate of pay and assume it would be the 'top' end, then moan it's dodgy when it's not what you expect (without confirming it).

Title should be changed to unexpected pay rate.

Usually any shift allowance would be added after the pay rate ie £6.19 - £7.77 plus shift allowance, what I would expect is that you would (obviously depends on a lot of things age, skills etc.) start on the lowest and then work your way up but they add shift allowance on after the hourly rate.

Still amazed you took the job not knowing what rate you would get paid.

A company will hardly pay you more if they have no reason to believe they can't get away with passing less.

so you have all morning off and are complaining you get paid what the job was advertised as paying?

Never assume anything, employers dont get offended if you ask about pay, they understand thats what you want.

would you of turned down the job if you knew this before or are you just dissapointed in you pay packet?

and what company goes 'boom'?? is it a highly unsafe oil refinary you work at?
