2013 graphics cards rumours?

Expect nothing major for similar prices. AMD went all in with a 384bit bus, larger die and go much bigger and you start ramping up price, power quickly so it can't get much bigger, though with that bus they can throw a crapload more shaders on there for an obscene cost if they wanted.

Nvidia went much smaller and only 256bit bus, but we can already see performance at the high end is stunted by that bus, theres little to no more performance to be had on a 256bit bus so if Nvidia wanted to make something much faster than a 680gtx, you're talking jumping to a 384bit bus, more shaders, a lot more power, a lot bigger die size, and a lot bigger cost, which seems unlikely. It actually wouldn't surprise me if they did make something like their Gk110 or whatever it is in a more desktop friendly version but, they fact they really haven't yet, and the fact they could easily have made a bigger core now makes me think they won't.

Previously every generation they were selling low yield 500mm^2 parts at the £400-500 mark, this gen they've fobbed off a 300^2 part at the same prices, far far higher profits for them, but a generation that struggles badly at higher definitions. If people weren't paying £400-500 for a 680gtx, there would be a far greater chance of them bringing out a 400-500mm2 part for gaming and it would be epic, but why bother when people are buying something that costs you less than half the price for the same amount?

Seems both companies are going for sensible second gens on 28nm akin to the 6970/580gtx, only really minimal performance bumps and at this stage it seems unlikely they'll add some killer feature. 20nm for the next big more noticeable jump in performance.

I still wouldn't buy right now, 15-20% more performance if they manage that, is still more performance and likely for a similar cost OR you're more likely to get a 7970/50 for a really awesome price in a couple months. AMD's is supposedly pretty much ready now but being delayed due to 7xxx stock/demand, so you can expect some good pricing in a couple months to start shifting the last stocks.

The GPU market really seems stagnant, long gone are the days of a doubling in performance every 12-18 months :(

Hopefully the move to high DPI monitors will spur renewed interest in the high end graphics market from both consumers and manufacturers?

GTX 580; 520mm / 384Bit / 48 ROP's

GTX 680; 294mm / 265Bit / 32 ROP's
GTX 670; 294mm / 265Bit / 32 ROP's
GTX 660TI; 294mm / 192Bit / 24 ROP's
GTX 660; 221mm / 192Bit / 24 ROP's

7970; 365mm / 384Bit / 32 ROP's
7950; 365mm / 384Bit / 32 ROP's
7870; 212mm / 265Bit / 32 ROP's
7850; 212mm / 265Bit / 32 ROP's

As you can see there, while the 79## (Tahiti) are larger than the GTX 680/70/60TI, for some reason the 78## (Pitcairn) is a lot smaller, smaller even than the GTX 660.
Its nearly half the size of Tahiti.

I think this is just natural part of the lifecycle of well development/already technically advanced products. Processors these days don't seem to see massive jumps in performance either.
Already down to 28nm, it must be so difficult getting to 20nm (nearly 29% decrease).

Of course the economy might have something to do with it. These companies need to try to maximise their profits during hard times.

Processors have a growing number of cores. With the graphics cards we can double up performance with SLI/XFire

Still very happy with my 6870!

It can still play all the latest games on high settings at 1080p. I couldn't care less than anything more than 2x AA!

Probably going to build a new rig around IB-E + HD8000 / 700GTX - at Q3 2012.

Until then I will keep enjoying my current rig :D

Makes you think of the future in 5 years time,
how are they going to break the barrier of cpu and gpu technology when they go as low as 20nm on them both, then where do they go ?

back up to 45nm but with more shaders and cores and a nuclear powerplant to run them again with amazing heat lol

then repeat the cycle again lol

If it performs adequately then wait, if not, buy now.

Sell up for what you can get while it still holds value, and put it towards a 7950. Then you can get another 7950 when you see it struggle and there is further price drops. That should keep you going til series 10. :p

With the last generation (580) Nvidia had a bit of a performance lead, couple this with AMD's decision to go with the 7970 in its original non GHz form allowed Nvidia to go with the 680 as we know it. Now at what point they decided not to have their GK110 as the top tier card is fairly irelevent, as we all know they were able to get the required performance from the GK104. Now what I expect Nvidia round do is go with the much bigger GK110 chip for the next top tier card. But personally what i would like them to so is go for a inbetween sized chip, a refined 384bit card with slightly more cores, rather than the GK110 monster that will probably be a hot and hungry beast but obscenly fast.

they've released so many cards last year that we've OD on them :D, i cant be bothered to even think about another card yet...let alone another PC upgrade

so the 7970 will be good till about 2014, backed up by the fact that the pc gaming market is quiet too.....we're obviously going through a quiet period for the next year

this means my 7970 will last a long time, longer than any other card i've had, now this is good value for money !!!!!!!!!!!

lightning 7970?..... why what for, just to play the same type of games as last year, no i dont think so
