Southern drivers in the snow!

Right. You and the dawdlers at 15-20mph on A roads, who driver far slower than police cars, buses, vans, trucks, are the ones that are correct.
I totally agree.
Came round a corner on a 50mph road to be met with someone driving at no more than 15mph. Not what I wanted to see if I'm honest.
I was on winter tyres so was travelling at ~35 but luckily I saw him early enough.

If you can't drive at a proper speed, then STAY AT HOME.

Have to agree - had several 4x4 drivers leaving far too small a gap behind me today.

Yup. An idiot in a Quashqi thing attempted to overtake me on a dual carriageway (i was doing 35-40 ish) going round a right hander uphill.

they ran out of something part way and started to move left into my lane, i slowed to make sure they couldnt make contact with me

I guess the vast majority of drivers are stupid then.

A sensible speed is where you have traction and are leaving sensible gaps.

Arbitrarily limiting yourself to 15-20mph is not sensible.

You can't guarantee traction in weather like this, so it's not arbitrary at all.

I had to break lightly for a 90 degree bend earlier, and whilst I looked to be on fairly clear tarmac, the ABS kicked in at the lightest touch of the brake pedal. And this was doing 20mph or less.

Even the treated A-rounds round here are still slippery in places, despite looking clear. So I'd rather people erred on the side of caution if you don't mind.

I'm not saying you shouldn't brake in plenty of time for bends.

(/troll mode) If you can't see around a corner, why do 50mph around it? Particularly with the weather as it is at the moment.

It's a wooded area and in normal conditions I always go 50 round the corner. I see no reason not to.
As I said, I was doing 30ish today. At least the guy had his lights on!

Highway code would say otherwise :D

The point I'm getting at is, you shouldn't critique other drivers for driving slowely at the moment. You have to drive around expecting to come across ice/slow cars/snow/sliding cars. It's better for people to drive slowely, rather than get complacent and crash.

It was 35 earlier :p.
30ish is 35?

The guy was going 10 miles an hour!
I'm sorry, but that is not a safe speed.
If he can't drive at a sensible speed then he should stay at home or fit tyres that are safe for the conditions.

Anyway, the highway code doesn't apply to me ;)

That's the issue both in the UK and over here. A lot of people don't have the right tools for the job and have no experience of driving in such conditions.
Hopefully this will change as snow is becoming more 'normal'.

I find 4x4 drivers hilarious this time of year. They feel that their purchase is actually justified, because for a couple of weeks in winter they get to act like absolute prats, tailgating people, driving too fast for the conditions, and generally acting smug in the off-road vehicle that they've never taken off-road, nor ever will.

Someone please tell the southerners that have moved up to Lincolnshire (to be in da caantry, innit) that driving a 4x4 doesn't make you invincible; and while you're at it, tell them that owning a house in a village, and taking a dog for a walk doesn't make them a farmer either.

10mph is slow yes, but ultimately you are the one who it in the wrong there. You just don't go speeding around corners if you can't see around. Any corner in any conditions could have a stationary car around the other side, a horse rider, cyclists, pedestrians. You drive at a speed where you can't stop in such an eventuality then you are the one who is an ********. In the dry you can get away with a lot, but anyone with an ounce of sense should know better than to try their luck in snow/ice.
You might have winter tyres, bully for you, almost everybody else doesn't though and that isn't about to change here in the UK anyway.

The next southerner ill moan about is my neighbour

we have a shared drive, each have a paved front garden, but i have an drop curb on my side of the shared drive.

as there is snow on the driveway i can see the neighbour has driven most of the way across my garden to get her car onto the road

You need a rockery :D

The amount of people who have tailgated me, then gone flying past and stamping on the brakes to turn a corner today is incredible. Ok so I may be going a spot slower than is strictly necessary, but I have no idea what condition the road could be in 100m, and you have no idea how well my car is dealing with the snow (as it happens, poorly) so why people see the need to tailgate, and then perform dangerous overtakes totally eludes me.

It's slippy as **** underneath, leave more time for your journey, don't get irate at drivers who are just being sensible..

I completely agree. People need to drive at a speed that is safe for the conditions but also their level of driving. Too many people have gone off the road over the weekend for being cocky and driving too fast.

I had a word with a billy boy racer for going around 20mph in a 30 where the conditions meant that 5-10mph was much more suitable. The roads were really very slippery.

Yup, that would be ideal, Ill post up a picture later, its definitely a liberty though.

The funny thing is that we get along with her perfectly well, shes a good laugh, couldnt get a nicer neighbour, but when I specced and built the thing "making life easier for the people next door" wasnt actually a requirement. If a problem occurred with the corner of my paving she drives across, i doubt theyd be round in a hurry to help pay for the costs

i am also going to moan about the fact that ive turned into a right moany old man

"I have winter tyres so I was able to use the outside lane which no one had driven on for the last week and blasted past everyone at 70 while they crawled along at 15mph and stared in amazement and other such BS...."

In reality I'm taking my time and getting about ok at the moment. If the weather forecast is to be believed then we've had the worst of it now.
