Lifetime spend on buying cars

not too bad if that 50k bought you a 1M and a Focus RS. How have you managed to spend that much on a 118 and a focus? or am I missing something???
Speed isn't a priority for us; due to heavy commuting traffic (98% of it's use) my average speed is about 30mph. It would be no quicker if I had Eyedot's F40.
Cars such as a 1M, Focus RS, M3, Skyline etc do not fit our lifestyles right now.

We bought new to get the cars as we wanted and because there weren't any used ones available.

If spending 50k on white goods (albeit very good ones) fits your lifestyle, what more do you need in life to go out at go something that represents a shred of value for money with some performance? Not having a go, it's your money... but I'm a bit confused.

Anyway, my contribution

Ford Escort 1.3 (14 months) - £550
Ford Fiesta 1.4 (28 months) - £630 + Escort in p/x
Ford Focus 1.6 (20 months so far) - £2250 + Fiesta in p/x

£3430 total spent, Focus is still worth £2000 so I've only 'lost' £1430 over 5 years. If you're going to drive something crap, make it cheap :)

To be fair not everyone wants or would care about having 300bhp. I completely get that side of his purchase.

Wholeheartedly agree. I do think spending 50 grand on those 2 cars is just crazy though

First Almera - £900
Second Almera - £450
Third Almera (GTI) - £1100
BMW 520i - £400
Eunos Roadster - £900

Just about to swap the Roadster for a 6N2 Polo GTi, and possibly buying another Almera GTi

So that's £3750 in 6 years or so.

Interesting idea, not really representative of the "cost" over time, but I estimate about £55000. That said, I sold most of my cars for a profit, the only 2 at a loss so far was my 530d which coincided with the GFC (money made on mileage covered pretty much everything so that wasn't so bad) and my Falcon which I did 40000km in. Overall, I'm in the black for my assets for my motoring life.

In this weather you'd likely beat me :)

Buy me something new...sure it wont hurt the bank :p

That which is given is rarely appreciated... that which is earned .. is cherished.

I've spent approx £45k net (only counting change-over costs - price minus trade in of old car) in 10 years.

Based on the fact that my current car is worth about £35k, that's not too bad!

Total amount spent would be around 71k since I had a license (20+ years)... although for 3 of those years I had company cars and another 5 years used mainly 2 wheel transportation and hire cars.

(cars included: Saab 900, Audi 90, E39, E36, CL65, Range Rover, Audi A4, Golf 6 GTI)

Depreciation is around 16k during my ownership, of which 14k was the Range Rover (over 3 1/2 years), I don't include the GTI as I still have it.

It's unlikely to a straight £50k though is it. They're most likely on pcp or lease hire.

It is unlikely, but regardless of whether you spend 50k now or 60k over 3 years, it's still money out your pocket. A lot of people seem to think that just because a monthly payment is manageable it makes the product cheaper

Metro - 1 Case of beer.
Mazda 323 - 1 bottle of wine.
Volvo 960 Estate - Free.
Mondeo 2.5t Estate - 7.5k
Over 15 years.

The. cost of buying a car came as a shock!

Less than 25k in 14 years even with "modifications" to cars and motorbikes. Including bikes and cars this totals to 10 vehicles.

So it works out at around £1.8k a year.

Over the last 2 years I've had company cars so other than the ~4k in tax I pay life's become cheaper.

C. £300k since 2001 (excluding first car from my parents)

but got back £200k on selling them plus still got two cars on my drive now, so about £75k in depreciation to date. Wouldn't want to add up other costs as I am sure that will come to more!
