Threats of a power cut?

We're getting power cuts around my area due to the snow (no idea how), and I've unplugged my PC completely and was wondering, is it just a myth that power cuts can cause your PC to explode?

Depend on your PSU, a good one should protect your components and can even maintain power on with the momentary outages/switch overs you sometimes get.

One of the reasons to allways buy the best PSU you can afford

Pretty sure good branded PSU's have surge protection, so they should have power cut protection as well.

Pretty sure if there was a power cut, the PSU would stop any excess power destroying components.

Snow/ice bringing down the lines.

No, I do not think a power cut would damage the PC. If it does cut off though, switch it off at the wall until power is back on.

You will lose unsaved data though.

It should be enough. It's not a guarantee - if you want a guarantee, get an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) - but it's very rare for a power cut to do any severe damage. My PC sat in a corner where it was quite vulnerable to the plug being kicked out, must have happened 20 or more times with no issue.

It should stop any major damage being done, though. Worst case, you might end up with a corrupted file on your HDD as it gets a power cut part way through writing. The myths about blowing up your PC are from a few years ago when components were far more fragile and PSUs/power circuitry were much less advanced.

That's a load off my mind, then, couldn't care much about file corruption as most things on my HDD are games that can be revalidated anyway. :p

Are you connected to a surge protector at all?

Is that like a plug extension? Could get one tbf, I assume they are fairly cheap?

I use the Belkin ones OCUk sell as they are guaranteed to cover equipment plugged in for about £3k as well.

There not too expensive.

Reduce the noise of what? :p

electrical equipment makes noise down the powerlines when turned on.

This affects the speed / performance of powerline kits.

Things like washing machines, tumble dryers can vastly reduce the speed of a powerline kit.

The belkin surge protector removes a little bit of the electrical noise of the devices plugged into it.

Think i got 5mbps increase when i used my 2

I had a powercut once, it somehow fried the ethernet port on my asus p5q deluxe motherboard :(

Everything else was fine except the ethernet port.
