Evening guys, I currently commute 80 miles a day (to work and back) in a W reg Puegeot 306 HDI which currently has 242,000 miles on the clock. It's still moving but I can honestly see it giving up the ghost at some point soon, so I want to bite the bullet and swap it for something newer/nicer/more economical.

I have been keeping track of my economy for 3 months now and considering I do 90% motorway miles a return, on average, of 44mpg isn't that great.

I will have around £4,000 to spend, looking for something comfortable, better economy and pretty well spec'd. It doesn't have to be powerful but something a bit quicker than the 306 would be nice.

Wait until it dies, then buy something with the 1.9 TDI VAG engine in it.

Otherwise make sure you buy something pretty old and high mileage with a complicated and expensive engine and a posh badge on the front, thats definately the best way to do big miles on a budget and I'm sure all the suggestions will reflect this.

:D

I would look at a Leon TDi, or if you want something a bit more suited to a relaxing commute a Passat or Mondeo.

Lots of choice really, just keep it 4 cylinders and non-premium as said.

+1

306 hdi's are bulletproof. I know one that has passed between apprentices for the last 10 years with well over 300k on the clock and is still going strong. Just give it as good service every 10k and you'll be happy as Larry.

He already has a 306HDi ;)

yes that was the point of the post, people seem to think that after a certain mileage cars become suddenly prone to implosion. If there looked after most cars stay reliable. The 306hdi engine is extremely simple compared the the dual rail engines found in most modern diesels and in most cases if well looked after will out last the car shell.
i was trying to get across to the OP to keep the car and just service it when needed and it should easily last until the time comes he decides he can afford a new car.

Ignore Fox, get a BMW 330D. You should get one with at least 150k miles on it, 15 previous uncaring owners and no history just to prove him wrong ;)

Corrected for you

Why?

Why would you choose a BMW diesel engine if you had sub £4k to spend on a car to cover very high mileage in, for which reliability and running costs were key?

The only people who would recommend this have never owned a higher-mileage BMW diesel.
