Is this true? Declaring points on insurance (you got after you started the policy)

When I got my TS10 the copper told me that I didn't need to notify my insurance company till renewal. I double checked this with him and asked if this wasn't insurance company specific and he told me again, no you don't need to notify them until renewal.

Why would you expect a police officer to know about contractual insurance issues? He was wrong.

It's up to each insurer as to when they want to know.

It's always worth asking your insurer too via phone/email even if the documentation mentions that you HAVE to declare straight away, so I found out, as even though mine stated in the documentation they need to know about any changes including driving convictions straight away, it turns out they actually dont, which has saved me a lot of time, hassle and money.

I think they put that in the policy to ensure they can make the call whether they ammend the policy or not - if you had said you had picked up a CD60 or something, their response would probably have been different!

Just done a quick compararison from a site, declaring my points, and trying the option that I have had my insurance cancelled.

My quotes have gone from £450 (what it used to be) to just shy of £1k

That will be the CU80 code

I've read a fair few times they are now taking this code very seriously and some insurers are refusing to provide cover at all if you have one on your license, much like lots of insurers refuse to cover anybody who has had a driving ban and any more than 3 points at once.

It wasnt actually, it was if I had said yes to "Have you had your policy cancelled or declined by an insurer" which bumped it up to that price.

By adding my CU80 and any other declarations, and selecting "No" to the insurance cancelled part, it stayed at around £450-£480, instead of the 1k mark.

But luckily I dont have to do any of that now, and when I come to renew, my 3 points from 2008 will no longer have to be declared anyway, as they have expired from my ticket, and exept from any insurance declaration, as it would be over 5 years ago.

So just my recent ones will count.

are they able to add the code to your insurance then ? I thought the website said they could no longer cover you with that code ?

Duty of disclosure ceases when the offer is accepted and the policy starts, so any points after your policy start date dont need to be disclosed until renewal. What a lot of people dont realise is that when you're amending the policy mid term the duty of disclosure is opened again, until the amendment is processed, so you are obliged to disclose points when amending mid term, however as before if the inception date on the policy preceeded the conviction date then the policy wont be affected until renewal.
