Greatest all round fitness sport?

I saw a Superstars style program which had a slalom skier in, I remember he had an insane fitness level against the other sportsman which surprised me at the time.

MMA or Boxing.

In the other sports if you start to tire and take a breather then your team might lose position or you might lose a couple of points, in MMA or boxing if you tire and your opponent realises it then you're probably going home in an ambulance.

I'mma say American Football. 'Cause lets face it, what other sports see >6ft players with such ridiculous lean body mass being able to run so fast for extended periods of time? Some of those boys are huooooge.

Extended periods of time? I bet the longest down is (non punt return for the whole field) less than 15 seconds :p

Swimming would be my choice.

To make you better at any of the other sports you need to do something else, but swimming is complete in that it is on its own. You don't need to break it down, you swim.

To play any ball sport you need to do other things that are based in athletics or something else. For fighting you need athletic and power based activities.

Well granted, but they'd be moving the whole game, and when they run BOY do they run! Even with all that gear on and their bodyweight, I bet they'd run 100m faster than us and outrun most casual runners :p

Maybe I just secretly want to be Terry Crews :p

I'm surprised so many of you say swimming.

As someone who swam 2 hours a day 6 days a week, I'm not denying that I could probably jump into pretty much any sport and be fit enough to play it for extended periods of time. That said, it puts nowhere near the same strain on your body as other sports. The main reason I included water polo, was as someone, again, who has done both, I'd say it's potentially more physically demanding. When I swam I was happily one of the fastest in the year for 400m with no training in running. But then we didn't have anyone who was particularly good at 400m running IMO...

Even if we say swimmers are the 'fittest' guys out there aerobically, do we still think it's the greatest 'all round' fitness sport?

define all round "fitness".

set some boundaries here and you will see that something will fit perfectly.... like crossfit or ironman or something.

Ok guys. Let's have a bit of fun.

What do we reckon is the greatest all round fitness sport?

By this I mean, a combination of strength, strength endurance, flexibility, cardio, skill etc....

p.s. crossfit is not a sport :p

Surfing

Paddling into the lineup (the bit where you sit at the back where the waves dont break) with currents dragging you along, being pounded by the waves, paddling for the wave it self, actually riding the wave ... having to get back out and rinse and repeat the above.

Getting caught after wiping out and drifting around in the impact zone with little breath left in you, with another set about to hit you on the head... try and swim while surviving on little oxygen...finding your board and doing the same all over again.

Fitness, with added strength and the inherent danger of dying (either by drowning, eaten by a shark or hitting your head on reef) .. ensures the majority of surfers are very fit.
