My Surface for Windows RT Review

Yeah, wonder what we'll get it at price wise.
I'll be getting one as it's coming through work and could be the ideal work device for us here to I need to do some testing, the RT is great but there are some apps missing that make it a bit to weak for us here.

Few question to you RT users...

what exactly is desktop hack ?

I have Servioo running on my home network, would I be able to stream videos, music to RT ?

and why windows surface and not let’s say asus or any other ? asus will soon release win8 tablet for £399 on Atom - so I assume that will be running full win8 ?

I have a buyer for my old laptop so might get a tablet - sold ipad3 a while back as I am more android guy...so am toying with an idea of win tablet or nexus10...

Desktop hack is a hack to allow desktop apps run. Not just apps from the MS Store. The apps still need to be compiled for ARM CPUs though so it's not a huge amount of use at the moment.

Why Surface? For me, because it was the nicest piece of hardware. None of the other makes of tablet seem to be even close in terms of build quality or feel. I love the touch cover.

Atom devices will run full desktop apps on full Windows 8. If that's what you need then get an Atom or i3/i5/i7 based device.

More questions...
What's the difference between touch cover and surface touch or it is same? Reason I'm asking is that 64gb comes with a cover- on M$ page...

In my local CEX, there is 64gb one for £410 but on the sticker with price, it says no type cover...is 410 good price without cover?? ( best part is that they say it has i5 and hd4000 :) )
Could buy it and then return as they described it wrong if don't like it;)

It won't have i5 or hd4000 the surface pro isn't even released yet

Surface RT 32Gb £399
Surface RT 32GB with touch cover £479
surface RT 64Gb with touch cover £559
Surface Touch cover £99.99
Sufrace Type cover £109.99

Surface Touch cover is just the keyboard cover, surface rt is the tablet.
Touch cover = touch cover
Type cover = cover with proper traveling keys.

So they have every description wrong.

What they have is the 64gb surface rt with a missing touch cover. So if you could get it brand new worth about £480

I don't know if any other RT users have experienced a bug after the latest updates... I actually noticed it before it hit the news. Basically there is a problem with Windows Update not fetching, um, updates. Also seems to affect updates through the store too.

If you reboot the Surface it seems to jump start it, albeit temporarily as it just dies again after an indeterminate amount of time. Microsoft have acknowledged the problem and a fix is expected in a couple of weeks.

The articles I've read suggest it relates to the last bunch of updates not installing correctly and putting the Surface into standby, but mine went without a hitch so I don't really agree with that assessment. It is a bit annoying but not a complete disaster as it can be worked around for now.

Is anyone else having real issues with the store?, when installing something it either takes forever or doesn't install it at all. Then I will get a message saying my purchase could not be completed, even on free to install apps.

Just to add my 920 cannot download anything from its store either. Its been down or broken so many times in the past. They really need to get this sorted.

I had something similar once, had to use the refresh option to fix it on my PC but the Surface has never done anything similar and apps from the Store install without issue.

Probably going to go for the 64gb then.

I can see a 64gb going with touch cover on the bay... (it mentions type cover in the item description as well, so not sure if it comes with that too?) for £484.99... does that sound about right?

Cheers

Remember you have the mSD card slot as well which you can map rather easily to the root directories in RT.

and use them to store downloaded apps ?

Having apps on the SD card is not officially supported, although IIRC there's a registry hack that will put all downloaded apps on the SD card. Not that I have any idea why you'd want to do that, would be easier to just store movies/music/etc. on the SD card and use the internal storage for apps.
