How much left after bills?

Hi all,

I bought my first house last July, it needed loads of work but I am hoping to move in by July this year at the very latest (the point i have to start paying council tax ). I have worked out each month after paying the mortgage and bills i will have £414 left over for food, petrol and general living.

If I manage to get by spending £30 p/w on food and £20 p/w on petrol this will leave me around £214 each month to get by I suppose.

I was just wondering what other people on here have left over each month after bills. I am hoping to get promoted in my job later this year after having talks with my manager so hopefully I will have more spare cash by then but does anyone think I am being unrealistic with anything above and moving into a house on such a tight budget.

Me and my girlfriend have been together for coming up 3 years but I doubt she will move straight in due to still being very close to her parents and my house being quite a distance away but we will see, I think she will help me out with food and stuff but I dont expect anything if she is not living with me.

Any comments would be great,

Thanks, Sam

That seems low because it might be hard to save money. Also I know you said it was unlikely but moving in with someone for financial reasons, IMO, is not a good reason to move in together.

This is not the reason I want her to move in, I would love for us to live together but I think its key to take things slow as moving in together is a massive step in a relationship. I can manage on my own until the time is right, all I am saying is no doubt she will help out with food and stuff if she is staying a few nights a week so my left over money is not set in stone.

Well you come out in the plus, I think it would be nice to have a little more though. I'm in a similar boat, have you thought about having a lodger? You can receive £4,250 per year tax free, so if you have a friend, maybe a good way to boost your revenue.

Bear in mind you can't fix your living costs and you can't budget that precisely for life, there will always be car repairs/insurance/tax, house repairs and other things that hit you financially when you least expect it. Make sure you have a little bit of savings stashed away for a rainy day.

I am talking about the money you have for food and culture after you have covered all your other expenses.

And do you think you live comfortably without having to watch what you send if you go to the pub for instance.

I reckon mine is about 750.

Just got my first proper job and my own place in London. After bills I have enough :)

Can't really help you I'm afraid, other than I always budget food and fuel as well as general living in my monthly spend to know what I have left after everything is paid up. Are there any savings you can find from bills etc? Having a lodger/2nd person is the best way to save yourself some money.

Things are always tight to begin with.

A lodger sounds like a good option till you're ready to move the missus in or get a new job which pays more.

This thread is pointless, nobody is going to let on how much wealth they have at the end of each month.

Enough.
