Unrealistic expectations of Jaguar and extended warranty?

I have never previously owned an approved used car, so when I decided I wanted an XF, I wanted an approved used car so it would take out the risk and hassle element of owning an expensive premium car. So I just want to check if I am having unrealistic expectations so if I do kick up a fuss, I'm not being an idiot.

For a month or so the fuel filler flap has been sticking shut. When its stuck, I can force it open but it involves bending the flap (its plastic) but its not ideal and I don't want to damage it.

Anyway, the car went in for its yearly service and whilst in for its service I wanted the flap to be fixed via the extended warranty. The dealer contacted the warranty company and they said they won't pay for the problem as the problem is so common, it's deemed a manufacturing defect it should be referred back to Jaguar. A search on Google shows its a common problem. So the dealer called Jaguar and they said they would pay 25% of the value to fix it, the dealer argued and they managed to get it increased to 75%.

I don't think that is reasonable, if the warranty company thinks its a manufacturing defect so won't cover the cost then surely Jaguar should pick up the whole bill and not ask the customer to foot a portion of the bill. I phoned Jaguar customer relations and they have flatly refused to pay up more than 75% of the cost. Now the outstanding cost is only £76 so it's not the money on my part but its the principle, if you sell something that is defective then in my mind Jaguar should make good.

So am I being unrealistic and should accept the 75% or is this bad customer service and I should escalate this out of principle? To my mind, if Jaguar are arguing over something as trivial as this then what on earth would they be like with something large and costly?

The fuel filler was a recall item on the 2.7, you've got the 3.0 I thought, which was a redesign supposedly to stop them jamming. Have a look at Jaginfo and try to contact Liam through there.

Yep I have the 3.0, looking on XFforums its a reoccurring problem on the 3.0 as well

How old is the car?

To be honest I would not let this die at all. For comparison I would fully expect BMW to foot 100% of the bill for this.

The idea behind the extended warranty is that it is sold to the customer was a manufacturer product, even though its underwritten by somebody else. This sort of dispute is the sort of thing warranty firm and manufacturer should have behind closed doors after one of them pays the bill.

You are not being unrealistic in your expectations at all.

No doubt I'm probably technically wrong and they're separate companies legally, but as far as I would care as a consumer I would consider the warranty on an approved used car to be with the manufacturer... I wouldn't expect them to be playing the blame game between manufacturer and warranty company.

EDIT: Lol. Fox posted while I was writing that and used the correct term; underwritten.

If it's a manufacturing defect (which sounds like it is), it's actually up to the retailer, not the manufacture, to sort it out. So, get the dealership to pay for the repair under the sale goods act.

Agreed with what has been said really, if you bought the car within the last 6 months couldn't you throw the SOGA at them?

As Fox has explained though the garage can contact Jaguar to see if they will pay and they can contact any 3rd party warranty company they use and see if they pay but at the end of the day if neither will pay they should be making up the difference not you.

Hope you get it sorted their issue regardless of cost. Why buy an approved used car! Just as well buy a used private car and get a third party useless warranty!

Exactly, I paid the premium thinking it would be plain sailing with no arguments but nope.
