Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

you both make a fair point, my words aren't very sustainable. thing is i did watch a lot of in-depth videos (because... i'm youtube addicted) and i admit my opinion is based mostly on that. and i did install the start button almost immediately but when i open pictures and pdf files, metro does pop out of nowhere and it's pretty confusing and ugly imo. it just looks like a 23" smartphone with giant buttons that would be thumb sized on... a smartphone. anyway my point really was that if you do have an issue with metro you can easily skip it and reap the benefits of 8, and not so much "metro is crap" (even though that's what i think given what i've seen and kind of experienced :p). in other words i'm justifying an upgrade to 8 without necessarily praising the os. the typing to search programs is cool but that requires me to remember the names of my programs, and to remember which ones are sub-programs... or. ? it's confusing.

Cheeky to ask I know but has anyone got a spare upgrade key from the Windows 7 promotion Microsoft did earlier.

They expire tomorrow so if anyone has one they don't want to use then I would happily take it off your hands as I've decided to upgrade the rest of the family pc's and would obviously like to spend a bit less if possible.

Contact details in trust.

Apologies if this against the rules and thanks to anyone that responds.

watching videos about it is nothing. you need to use it, not for only 1 minute. I really think if you give it a week or two you will see it's not the different and easy to use

you know, i was basically responding to the bitter feeling that many are having with my post, hence the quotation marks. man i could put in the effort, but i'm not bothered enough to relearn an OS. start button is great as far as i'm concerned. inevitably i will toy around with metro at some point (i just need to middle click my start button to bring it up) but right now it's really really unappealing. not least because i'm shallow, and it still... looks ugly as hell.

i'm glad not everybody is like that tbh ;).

why have a pc or laptop if you can't be bothered to lean new things?

windows shouldn't have to stay in the 90's

also u can change how metro looks by backgrounds, colours, ect.

But you cant just write off experience.

For me getting rid of the start button is stupid. over the last 10 years EVERY PC user knows, uses the start button. They know where SGUT DOWN is and how to access all their programs.

Simply deleting this start button and not having anything like a replacement is ludicrous. Just why?

Why even have a desktop at all if you are going to that length to ruin the users experience?

Metro sucks totally. The whole point of multi core, high GB memory is for multitasking. When im in an 'app' and want to change track in winamp, how do I do this?

why would I want to right click in Metro Explorer (IE) to see my other tabs? or to imput a URL? How long must I hover on the left hand side to get to my desktop and open winamp?

I want my task bar to be constantly visible, it might take up 50 pixels of real estate but it means I can flick from program to program with a single click.

I don't even know how anyone can justify Metro for a pro/power user.

i assure you i have plenty of satisfaction on my pc doing things other than learning new UIs. not sure why my view is so abhorrent. i like start, and metro is ugly/i don't care much. end of, surely? we're all allowed to do what we want with our pcs maybe? :/

I thought I'd be bothered by Start/Metro, and at first I too was up i n arms, saying OMG tablet OS, it sucks etc. but, now I've used it I'm pretty non plussed :) it doesn't interfere too much and I don't get forced to use it, I do like the slickness of it all and the new ui is actually pleasant.

For what I use my machine for, I won't be going out of my way to pin a lot of tiles, I have everything removed anyhow but I'd say for all the haters I was in a similar mind frame, but I am pleasantly surprised at how decent it is, just for the general performance increase and under the hood changes.

this post is a good example why people shouldn't just give up after one look at metro.

Same, I really like it now. I've installed the classic shell mod tonight & like it even more, this OS appears absolutely rock solid & very slick once you've got used to the quirks (or tweaked them out).

exactly how i feel. i've got ribbon open and the general look is much classier than 7. nothing but a few little improvements basically

But what could you ever need metro for? I have a desktop with shortcutd . I can multi task easily vis the task bar. One click for any short cuts on it or two via start menu. But I can also right click on the desktop to change graphics settings or click the volume in the bottom right to adjust as necessaru .

Its just all there ready on windows desktop.

Metro is for tablets where you will never be running multiple browsers at the sane time (say YouTube and another page) while tweaking afterburner or whatever. For a PC user there's no comparison.

Live tiles and some apps are far better than websites.
All media stuff I far prefer metro style.

Can press windows key and get a lot of info in a second, then go back to what I was doing.

u can have multiple apps running at the sane time. even use 2 apps at the sane time.

I think your looking at metro in the wrong way. I see metro as a graphical start menu with a bonus of able to use apps (which u don't have to use apps at all if u don't want too)

with a classic start menu I find it hard to click on the program I want because it's in a list form so theres not must space for error to click.

What about 3 apps at the same time or a cross between an app and a real application ?

Fine metro can be a visual start menu. But then so is a desktop with a graphical short cut icon.

See I thought this was really good until I realsed MS decided not to include the ability to manage audio in the new UI. Meaning if you use Skype or some other applications like steam they will turn the volume of you're music down while you are in a call and the Music app is in the background. Truly shocking decision especially when MS nows owns Skype.

It's a real shame as I was actually using the free streaming they offered. But back to Spotify it is. (It's like they don't even want my money)

titles look better and much easier to click on plus the live title feature gives good information without needing to open the app or program.
