Alienware m18x or m17x r4?

If you've got a 32GB memory stick I'd personally use this...

The mouse pad - dell will supply one, welcome to the world of Dell customer support, not the best I’m afraid. they are very polite but script driven agents that don't understand what is required, what you need to do is keep calling until you get someone who will help, you will get this sorted just takes time with Dell.

Dell can remote your machine if you struggle to get the respawn completed. But personally I’d find a 32GB usb stick, what I used it worked flawlessly.

is there a way of backing it up from the 32gb usb 3 stick so ive got a hard copy of it on cd (as i would have to delete the info afterwards, im trying to plan for the future)

i can always plug the pen drive onto my pc which i think will burn things fine, just dont know how to break up the information so it will work from dvds as 2 recovery discs (dont even know if its possible)

i wonder if it is just hard ware with the laptop, weird how it just burned disc one when i reinstalled alien respawn, but still spat out disc 2

I used a 32GB memory stick, installed the SSD, put the Alienware image back on, got my 750GB + 32GB mSATA working again, got the system to how I wanted it, Steam, all my apps using ninite.com removed the rubbish I didn't want, then booted up again using a Micosoft image X boot USB and took an image X image to an external drive, which after compressing which image x did for me, resulted in around an 8GB file as by then I'd removed the swap file and hibernation file, leaving me with a nice clean image with my own software pre installed..

I then copied the image to my cloud storage (dropbox) as i've got something like 50GB online cloud storage and for me that is it, if I need to image my machine up again I won't bother with respawn, I've got my own image using image X..

So, to answer your question I don't know but you can pull the file off the stick to an external HD?

Very informative iv-tecman. For you, this will be a really stupid question, but can you complete a backup (for me, it's using Dell Backup & Recovery software as I will be getting a 7720 tomorrow) image then put that on a NAS drive, and if needs be after a disk failure or something, can you then reinstall the OS using the disk image that's on the NAS drive? Hope you know what I mean. Thanks.

Well generally you can put any file you want to a NAS box provided you can read the file.

So, if the backup /restore application creates a set of flat files that you can copy from the USB stick to your NAS drive for storage, the I see no reason as to why this wont work.

Put the files into a folder using the exact same folder structure as the USB stick the backup application creates, then when you need them should your drive fail, then put the files back to the usb stick and restore.

Now, if you want to restore from the NAS, then you’d need to setup PXE boot, use image X, setup NTFS permissions, shares etc etc.. It gets whole lot more complicated and not worth the effort for one single laptop restore.

So basically just copy the files from the USB stick to you NAS, and store should be fairly simply really.

Anyone got any recommendations for a bag / carry case for my m17x r4?
I was looking at the Orion stuff but they seem to be very expensive for what they are.
Basically want something to put the laptop and the charger in and maybe a few other bits n bobs.

orion is good quality, nice and padded, i got one reduced, think i paid £50 something
other than that i have no idea

Turbo boost was already enabled, 'argus monitor' confirmed it!

Cheers i-vtecman!

So, all working now is it?

finally got my HTC one X connected via Bluetooth using the inbuilt bluetooth adapter, that was a right PITA. you'd think it would be easy, but no..

Anyhow, finally got it up and running, and can finally internet share, remote my laptop from the sofa when using it to watch movies and transfer files via bluetooth, think that is it for me, just about got mine running just as I want it.

Excellent laptop, good for anything, excellent with XBMC, superb for games, excellent screen... Crikey, could it be i'm finally happy with mine lol

My M17x r4 did come with a mouse pad, its not hard to miss inside the box it’s a big back pad with a huge blue alienhead on front… Check over your order, it will say place mat in EN/POL/GER etc… Pester Dell for that one.

dell are saying that the place mat is a piece of a paper, not a mouse pad

Really, I honestly did think that was the mouse pad lol Well that is Dell and their stupid kit listing...

Wont they send you a mouse pad, what a bunch of cheapo gits..!! I got a replacement M17x as my first M17x was faulty, and both of them had the mouse pad.

now, if i'd known you hadn't got yours I'd have posted you the one I got in the replacement, I was naughty and kept the drives, power supply and laptop soft cover, sent the rest back, including the pad, if I had it still i'd have sent you it.

Complain, not fair you don't get one when everyone else gets one..

i am trying to get through to them, but they are acting like my father when you ask him for money (bunny in the headlights, blank expression - deny all knowledge)

they are insisting no one gets mouse pads as it isnt listed in the contents list, i have told them there are several people on forums who bought one at the same time who DID get a mouse pad, and they are ignoring this i think, mind you they were denying it before when moogley posted in here about the free warranty (they basically said i was making it up, and then when i showed them the link that he was making it up, it turned out what he said was true and they still wouldnt do anything about it)

getting pretty tired of dell now tbh, my blu ray burner is still hit and miss (brand new laptop) and they are saying its not hard ware, they know im not very good with technology i think, so they are making me do a merry dance

Not many R4's this week :-(

Guys, I got my 7720 today. Using it now. I'm quite impressed though it's a shame mine didn't have the backlit keyboard. It's in pretty good condition with only a few hairline scratches and a couple light marks.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a cheapish pair of 3D glasses since the system came without them? Will have a gaming session this weekend and see how the 650M stacks up.

Can someone post a picture and describe the mouse pad ( hard soft etc) that you get with the laptop so I can show it to a dell rep, it might help me get one they said ?

they are still acting like its incredible they would give away something free

Heres something thats happened to my r4, my dvd drive has gone missing, i was able to use it one day, the next, i cant even find it in 'My computer', even device manager isnt coming up with it in there. driver issues, cable come out or broken? i went to see about a loose cable, but by the looks of it, i'd have to take the whole plastic cover where the keyboard is? i didnt have time to check so i left it.

sounds like its not connected? do you hear the optical drive spin when you turn the laptop on, does it spin when inserting a disc?

Nah, i dont hear anything, plus i cant get anything inside, its like their is a metal bit stopping me from putting disks in. i'm guessing its some locking thing that keeps disks inside when in use, must just come up once disconnected. I'll see about taking it apart at the weekend.

Did anyone see any of the R4's today? I kid you not but they were all mispriced. I went for the first one which was with a 7970 and was priced at something like £47. Will that be honoured? Really, really p***ed I didn't get one :-(
