Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

It's utter gash if you don't use your pc like a tablet and actually want to work on it.

Get Win 7 pro, the only thing Win 8 brings is faster boot times, otherwise it's poor.

What are you dribbling on about?

I suspect most of the people here who've installed Windows 8 on their desktop actually USE it as a desktop machine, myself included.

Apart from the Modern UI that I see for about 3 seconds on bootup, I spend most of my day "working on it" without any issue.

The Modern UI does nothing to hinder using the machine as a full on desktop.

Thou speaketh from thy posterior methinks ...

Why thank you for that insight, how droll.

I've detailed my issues with this OS previously, to summarise:

Massive full screen start button/metro page is clunky for searching and displays very little info while taking up the whole screen.
Stupid app system, it's like multitasking never existed.
Poor floating menu systems, unintuitive and fragmented.
Loss of desktop widgets.
Crap metro apps (Calendar/Mail).
Terrible Xbox like experience in the store/apps - clunky and very little info on screen at any one time.

I can understand upgrading from XP/Vista but my advice to those running Win 7 would be to try it on a separate partition first. Most windows revisions are a clear step forward from what went before (except ME) whereas 8 to me is not as good as 7 was, what new things it brings I find poorly implemented.

Quiet at the back, you may drop the soap in the shower for Windows 8, I don't.

Your super duper list is just whining about apps that you can remove, and a search that whilst hugely improved can also be done through File Explorer on the desktop if you are desperate for an alternative.

Microsoft also strongly recommend that you also do not use Widgets in any of their os. They have been found to be a huge security risk.

I installed Win 8 last night on a small ssd, at a cost of £24.99, so for that price you won`t get no complaints from me. Sure, it is not going to be to everyones liking, but so far it does`nt seem to bad. Like anything new, it just takes a bit of getting used to.
I will still continue to use Win 7 for doing a lot of things and just have a play around with 8 until I get the hang of it. It is a little confusing at times but that is to be expected.

I'll agree win8 is stable since I installed it. its quick, fast boot and shutdown speeds etc all great.

So the underpinnings of the platform are fine. However the way it is presented to a person who has used windows before is poor. If you didn't know how to use a PC or were used to a tabled then great, look big screen images and things that are easy.

When you do want to truly multitask as I demonstrated with screenshots on the previous page then its clear that Win 8 can multitask fine but Metro doesn't aid this, it detracts from it.

Metro UI is just a launcher (in android speak) to make things easier for those who don't require use of a PC beyond reading your Hotmail or checking the weather. Otherwise its just not required.

Since you can bypass metro for the most part I dunno why people are still complaining about it.

Multi tasking apparently.. Even though it's the same as its always been. Apparently Windows 7 is better because it doesn't give you the choice to use apps if you want....

I can understand if someone doesn't like the look of something as opinion on decoration is purely subjective.

what are you on

metro wasn't made to replace the desktop and never will be..

multitasking it's where u can open many things and switch between them which metro can do, it doesn't necessary mean all what's open must be showing on the screen.... example if you open music player app, a office app, a weather app, so say your writing something in the office but need to change the song so u just switch to the music player app then switch back to the office app to continue the writing... that still called multitasking...

You are boring me now. Yes I can remove apps, I can strip out metro, put the start button back in - strangely if I do this what do I end up with? Windows 7.

Yes that's right, remove all the bodged on crap from windows 8, make it usable, and you have....oh....the previous OS. I rest my case.

Yes it's multitasking from a decade ago. One app on the screen at a time, nice. Oh you can use the retarded snap interface, nooooice.

if u really think then that why did u upgrade ?

MS offered a free public preview of win8 so u clearly knew what win8 had so if u didn't like that u shouldn't of bought it. so it's your own fault really. nobody forced you to buy win8

Whine moar.

The os wasn't made just to suit you although you appear to think it should have been.

Some of us actually use a few apps and find the desktop notifications etc etc useful, so why should MS change it to suit you?

Why do you keep bleating about full screen apps being full screen, when you can simply use the same desktop programs you always have which will be the same as they have always been?

Your arguments in a nutshell:

"I don't like Metro!"

Don't use it then install Start 8 or something, this is Windows customise away!

"I shouldn't have too! I don't like apps either multi tasking, something, LOL!"

Don't use those either if you don't want to?

"I shouldn't have to make that choice, I didn't have to before, I'm clearly confused by choice, I like being told what I can and can't do!"

Maybe you should consider a Macbook, Apple will make sure you are told exactly what you can and can't do so there's no confusion.... For the rest of us who can think for ourselves we can crack on.

This thread is clearly too complicated for you. My issues with 8 are clear and are related to my own use of it, I'm not going to think its great based on your use - so why reply?

If I could customise Win 8 how I like it there would be no issue, however MS has rammed it's new interface down everyone's throats in a very Apple way and told us to get on with it. Yes you can use third party apps to undo some of the damage but you're just turning your new OS back into your old one - so what's the point of the new one in the first place? And third party software is never the ideal way to modify your OS, this OS seems to be deliberately not customisable without third party software so your point is retarded, like many of your posts.

You seem to be unable to deal with criticism of your special friend therefore I will add you to my ignore list.

Honestly? I thought ooh new windows, should be good, normally each new one is a bit slicker.

Installed it via the online installer, tried it - hmmm what a crap interface, it's been designed by a 12 year old, oh no way to roll back, awesome work Microsoft.

If metro was left to be used on tablets and phones then great, let me switch it off, forget the apps and be done with it. However this is not the case it's a centre stage of the OS, metro, it's apps and the new Ui are the main changes of Win 7 and they're all (to me) a load of backwards steps.

You do not need to use metro. I installed something that I cannot remember the name off that installs the taskbar and boots direct to desktop. I use metro to check the weather and news and that's about it. The only thing I miss is the aero glass look. Everything else is the same or improved.
