Exactly this. If it's a medical requirement such as gluten-free, then fine. This is because medical issues / allergies are usually through no choice of your own. However, religion / freedom of religion is your own choice, so it shouldn't be as high up a priority if you're being penalised.

Yeah give them a bread only diet and then spend millions on treating them for malnutrition. Although in true dailymail fashion, perhaps they don't deserve medical treatment. When they start dropping dead it will save money. Actually, why don't we just save even more money and just hang them immediately?

Sod em, I still dont understand why people in prison have any human rights.
 
Just to stir it a bit - Not everyone in prison is necessarily convicted of any crimes. There are people there who are on remand awaiting a trial date ergo should they not be presumed innocent until proven guilty?
 
People have to have some human rights in prison, otherwise you're not only detaining them but compromising their health, which won't help anyone when they're released and is disproportionately harsh for some crimes, e.g. financial (controversial!).

The halal thing however: **** em tbh. If they insist on halal then they can eat vegetables. The cost of things like this will be enormous and when you consider what budgets are being cut all around the country, it's got to be hard to justify the cost.

Although in reality it's not hard to justify it, because imagine the fuss if it was stopped.
 
Muslims with potentially selective beliefs. Crime is ok by them but pork might not be, **** them.

By law prisoners have a choice of four meals at dinner, one of which has to be kosher/halal.

Messing around with inmates' food is one of the surest ways to cause trouble in a prison. Better to give them proper food than have to deal with regular prison riots.

Maybe so, but the question is: do you agree with this law (assuming you're correct and that it is law; I haven't checked)?

And should all laws be formed on the basis of minimising the number of people we upset?
 
bbc reporting that "prison groups are upset" oh really and what sort of mood do you think the people who have been victims of said criminals, end of the day your in prison stfu and be happy you get what you get now as many people would like to see it rolled back to victorian standards.
 
If I was locked up in the Bangkok Hilton, I don't think they'd pay any attention to my request for free range eggs. What do you expect in prison, it's not a hotel!? :p
 
I'd be disappointed if the Muslim Muppet Show don't burn any flags over this, someone should tell the European court of human rights and arrange some icecream and a free pardon.
 
The thing that annoys me about these stories is prisoners wanting their "human rights" respected, when many of them got into their situation by depriving other people of theirs.
 
I watched escape to victory a few months ago and Batman's butler, I forgot his real name was trying to negotiate meat to be included in the prisoner's rations.

So the point is - since when did people decide meat was a ****ing necessity? You can live without it and don't give me some lame "scientific evidence that you can't"

Prisoners should have no privileges, including meat. Give them lentils, bread and salad and this would stop such stupid stories.

if anything we should all be annoyed that us tax payers are paying extra for Halal prison grub and the company providing it are ripping us off! :p
 
Some 12.5 percent of the prison population of England and Wales are Muslims

If they are going to make a song and dance over some silly food nonsense then we should have chopped their hands off for stealing - we can't have them thinking we don't respect their religion :)
