Do i need a tv license?

You need a license if your TV is capable of receiving a feed. Doesn't matter that it is not plugged in.

Sorry, that's slightly wrong.

You only need a TV licence if you receive, watch or record TV as it is broadcast.

Disconnect the aerial and you're fine as the TV no longer receives a signal and you can't accidentally turn the TV on to a live broadcast..

Watch TV on catchup services after they've finished broadcasting (so Iplayer) and you're fine.
Watch DVD's/Blu's/video games and you're fine.

Groan the requirement for a TV licence for the Iplayer site is ONLY if you watch it via the Iplayers live stream.

BIG BOLD RED LETTERS:

You are hereby given office notice: Your property is now under investigation.

and then at the bottom f the letter left hand side circled in a big red line £1000 fine plus legal costs

Just scare-mongering. Ignore them. They can't do anything. It's a civil law. Not common.

I haven't had a TV for aeons and I choose not to play their games either. Each letter is sent to 'householder' and I just instantly recycle them, mainly due to the following:

1. They won't believe anything I say, as they would always need to verify that I am not lying, by sending someone round to check. This is insulting.

2. The content of the letters, which are at best mildly threatening and at worst pure scaremongering. This is also insulting.

My plan to remain anon has worked so far and no-one has turned up yet.

If I get a visitor I will just say: by all means 'detect me' with your magical (empty) box of tricks, or your (empty] tranny with a big aerial on the top and 'TV Detector Van' on the side. If they can detect me, like they have been claiming all these years, I will hand over the cash there and then!

Interesting. With new streaming services etc the law seriously needs updating. It's out of date. We used to have VM but cancelled the tv and just pay phone/broadband. So I've removed the cable and vm box but there is an old sat dish on the front of the house. Might be an idea to remove this I suppose

No, the law is fine. Your dish is fine. Someone's own interpretation of the law, is flawed. That is all.

BDEE please get off the internet with your terrible misinformation.

We have been through this subject countless time. OPs described circumstance does not require a license. BDEE, its the pitch forks or the dogs, which would you prefer?

And another bites the ignore list :)

theres a letter online somewhere that you can send off that basically says that if they send you any more letters you will consider it harassment. Not got the link now but I'm sure it can be found pretty easily.

OK so my tv license ran out at the end of the year, December, but i dont watch Live TV as i am always out when something is on i want to watch. so i decided not to pay.

Today i got a letter through the post that i am now being put under watch and will be monitored and could face a £1k fine.

i own a tv but the aerial is not plugged in, i do use it but only for on demand services which i know i dont need a license for and also for films i own streaming from my pc.

am i right that they cant touch me and i dont need a license?

As long as you dont watch the live TV you don't need one, if the aerial is not connect the better, even better if they do come round you need to de- tune your TV.
They do not have the right to come into your home, and you have the right not to say anything, and make sure you do not sign anything. In-fact they have no right or any powers.

Oh, it's you again.

Quoting the regulation is hardly misinformation now is it. But then there is no point in trying to reason with you, going on your past demonstrations of your personality.

Had the licence goons around about 15 mins ago. opened the door and got the usual have you moved in recently chat. Closed the door sat down and watched my iplayer.

You don't need to do anything. There is no law stating you must declare whether you have a T.V. or not.

Interesting point. I recently bought a TV in Sainsburys and before they would let me leave they made me fill out a TV license form that had my name, address, make and model of TV and other contact details which would be passed on to TV Licensing. All of which I found rather disconcerting and invasive. And given that I already have a TV License - a waste of bloody time.

Wonder how much of the TV License goes towards these berks that seem to love ritualistically harrassing and threatening people to drop £150 to watch that abhorrent untermensch of an oxygen thief Bruce Forsyth be defrosted and reanimated each week for Strictly Come Dancing.

There is no law that says you have to. You can refuse.

Declare yourself a Freeman of the Land and avoid paying any taxes at all. Apparently it's completely legit

;)

legally if you watch iplayer or catchup services then you still need a tv license. Even if you Don't have a tv but watch iplayer website they still say you have to have a tv license. There is a video on youtube of the tv inspector guy going through the browser history of someone who let him in.

Although the legislation does not mention i player bbc have just added that in, considering it is legalized theft to begin with it is not that surprising. I am surprised they didn't find a way to tax everyone even if they don't watch tv. considering that is the way the rest of socialism an taxation works, it is kind of unique for it be only required if you watch tv.

The letters hah, i have had about 200 over the years, no exaggeration, i just put them in the bin right away, don't even open them anymore.

I have not had a licence since last April and have recieved quite a few of these letters but just ignore them. Considering how much crap is on the TV these days and the amount of repeats, I just can`t justify paying it.
In regards to BBC iPlayer, if I click on a program that is being broadcast live, you get a Pop-up telling you that you need a licence, but never at any other time.
