How to route Ethernet cable down the stairs?

Mega is written as M regardless of the unit that follows it so regardless of bits or bytes the M is still uppercase.

Alternatively, if your stairs are carpeted lift the edge of the carpet and run it underneath.
Homeplugs are a god alternative to wireless, but they'll never replace a proper bit of copper.

I must say, im in a similar situ as the OP, i've tried homeplugs to extend my network (usually on wifi) and since the house is quite old, They drop out every 10 seconds pretty much.
The only way it seems is to run a cat6 upstairs and route it from there also. So its up to the OPs expense buying some homeplugs, but it doesn't work, they become quite redundant.

What about those LAN ports that you buy as a pair, and they fit into normal electrical sockets? 1 upstairs, 1 downstairs? I'm not sure what they're called, but an ex-colleague showed me a pair of them back in 2009 and he was saying how the LAN works across the 2 sockets, bit like a repeater I guess. Not sure how they work - wireless? Failing that, just buy 2 wireless routers, 1 up 1 down and use them as network repeaters.

I was sick of mine recently as the Router is next to front door so I had 3 cables 1 upstairs and 2 into living room. Nightmare.
I just bought a box of 100 cable clips as people have mentioned and they were £1 from Amazon.
I just put these where needed then once I hit carpet area I just lifted up the edges. For the stairs, I just ran it straight up along the board but at the top I had to then go across the staircase and into the bedroom.
I didn't want to take the whole carpet up so just lifted the edge up and taped a couple things together to push the cable all the way under then lifted the opposite end up in the corner and pulled it back out.
I even just left the grey wire but it still isn't really noticeable as it's tucked away nicely

Already been mentioned but get some self adhesive trunking like this.
This might not work depending on what kind of stairs you have, but if you have something like this, then you can put the trunking on top the ledge on the left and it will look quite smart.

Tacky plastic trunking would ruin the look of that fantastic hallway & stairs!
Personally I would have to find an alternative method even if it meant lifting floorboards or drilling holes and running cables externally!

I have just installed about 15ft of cat6 ethernet cable from the router downstairs, along the wall then up the wall and along the stairs using cable clips. Only took me 15 minutes and it doesn't look half bad. Might take some pics tomorrow... I just have to paint the cable to match the carpet XD
