How to route Ethernet cable down the stairs?

9mm Cable Clips will do it, The nail is so small u won't see a hole in your wall.

Edit: Asda sell them, Next to all the lightbulbs

Think we have a winrar! :D

Are you wanting to transfer large files? That's the only drawback I think. Mine stream HD files fine and route my Internet at its quoted speed.

Yes, homeplug is too slow for me.

Could you define that a little more....?

With my wired Gigabit / Switch and CAT5E I typically get 105mb/sec transfer of large files etc across the network to my server and HTPC etc.
I have always been curious as to the actual speed of those Homeplugs and which ones are you referring to...?

For internet use I found homeplugs were fantastic. Gone was the wireless lag in games, the speed was definitely equal to using an ethernet cable!

For file transfer, I'm not sure. However, there are 500mbps adapters now, which should give an estimated maximum throughput of just over 80Mb/s. Which, although slightly slower than via Ethernet, is not slow at all! And would make it much easier than having a massive cable going round the house :)

Surprised me that :)

I found it confusing when these, for example...

TP-LINK TL-PA411KIT AV500 500 Mbps Powerline

are sold with a 1 x 10/100Mbps Ethernet port.!

For a LAN? Yes, very.

Yes, but you'd need to be transferring files constantly for it to make an effect.

Not slow at all really.

I'd get the ones with a gigabit port :)

I agree - I just see quite a lot of the 200 Mbps and 500 Mbps powerplugs sold with a 1 x 10/100Mbps Ethernet port, it just seems to throttle the speed without the Gigabit port.

Homeplus I found are ****. To get the max throughput there are so many variables which need to be perfect.

@OP - What I did with mine is to use flat CAT 5e ethernet cable. It is so much easier to route and hides under the carpet easy without causing a bulge. There is no need to staple it down as the weight of the carpet should be sufficient.

If you're OCD just use some gaffer tape.

Another vote for cable clips.

Used them at home and while I was at uni and gonna be using them in 2 weeks when I move out, the nail is so small so wont really damage anything.

That or hide it under carpets if you have any ;)

Im planning to do the same, run some cat6 up to my room. I bought 30m of Cat6e off an auction site for a fiver and im just going to run it to a bridge upstairs and route it from there.

Just use some self adhesive trunking, surely? Match it to the wall shading and you'll barely notice it's there.

Need to nab some cabling from work to do right side of my living room and get rid of the homeplugs, which are just too flaky for reliable streaming. Mind you, that's probably just the crappy wiring.
