Hi all,

As reported in the tabloids Northumbria University have offered 700 staff voluntary severance as the start of streamlining for a new structure. There's a couple of articles in the media (not sure if I can link these but I guess not)

In short there's very little info for staff or the media, other than staff have been offered severance with no no information on what jobs will be available in the new structure. Or indeed any useful information on the actual structure.
If you do not take the severance there is a chance of redundancy a few months down the line if there is no suitable job to apply for or if you are unsuccessful at the interview.

There really is a lot going on in the country at the moment with places closing/downsizing!

Tbh I am not sure where the 700 part comes from. Though I suspect that includes academic posts as there is not that much admin. There are obviously inefficiency's but they are going about it the wrong way to get rid of staff. Some departments are very understaffed and some obviously very overstaffed so it may fix that. Not pleasant for the workers though, jump and get paid or hang on and possibly get very little redundancy for doing so!

Being an ex-student of Northumbria it doesnt surprise me, lots of staff in certain schools that for the better part of days have a few lecture's a week

the op is talking about a uni in newcastle..

his reply about northumberlands location regarding northumberland uni is wrong

No, my reply about Northumberland Uni/Newcastle not being North East is right. Aberdeen is North East, North East of England is actually Middle-ish East of the UK...

Sigh, when someone says North East they mean North East England. If they mean Scotland they say Scotland not North East. Newcastle is never refered to as being in the 'middleish east'.

Which is why Lincolnshire is called East Midlands...

All this independence talk really has stirred up the SNP (Scottish National Pedantry) :p

To be fair, this might cause a lot of lower rated universities to stop pushing weak courses just to get people degrees.................

Might be the wrong place to put this across but just saying :)

KaHn

Until info about the actual amount of heads being dropped is released, this actually means nothing really.

Also lolwindle. How ridiculous.

Forgot about this post,

I should have mentioned it is based in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

There will certainly be less academics the plan for lectures is to just have video recordings !

Currently got about 7 days to decide whether to leave !

Starting to think leaving all major life decisions to a coin toss or dice roll!

Dunno like, byker is starting to look like the middle east ;) :p

Would not be surprised to hear of this happening at more universities over the next year or two especially the lower to mid uni's who raced to put bums on seats during the bloating years of labour "improving" education in this country. Have to feel sorry for the people being made redundant though.
