Mattress advice

Another vote for factor beds direct. I purchased the origins 1500, same quality as a £1200 JL jobby.

Delivered within a week.

And again, another vote for factory beds! When you're looking at spending hundreds on a mattress take the time to read their site, it will arm you with a lot of knowledge and make you realise how ignorant you were about mattresses!

Then buy one of their mattresses, they are simply awesome.
I did :D

There was me thinking I was big pimpin with my £95 frame and £125 memory foam mattress

about the same my double bed cost :P

I think I paid £80 for the frame (once the bed is made who cares about the frame?) and £140 for the mattress (open coil), It was supposed to be temporary and just because I could get it delivered fast but it's about as good as the £1000 pocked sprung base+pocket sprung mattress I had been used to.

I'll keep using it until the mattress dies and get something more expensive that will last

How comes these mattresses cost so much? I am clueless when it comes to them, however what is the difference between a 2k memory foam mattress and a 1k one? Is there different quality of memory foam or is it the way the mattress is designed?

You'll only know once you've slept on it and everyone is different.

I bought a double foam/memory foam mattress off Ebay a good few years back.

Looking to replace now as it has sagged in the middle and creates some awful roll when me and the Mrs are in bed so we're looking at a pocket sprung one to replace it now.

£250 silent night one does for me, had mine for about 8 years now, new one being ordered shortly

I do not like memory foam ones, as find them uncomfy to sleep on with the way I am positioned on the bed

I'd recommend buying from a smaller independent shop (eg. La Romantica) and not from these big stores such as John Lewis, Dreams etc. You'll get far more in terms of quality.

O and ignore all the marketing rubbish about non turn mattresses, it's a huge con, and a cost cutting one at that. You want a mattress that you can flip over (double sided) not rotate, as it'll last longer.

Because the markup is through the roof. You're better off buying from a smaller independent shop, as you'll get more for less, not to mention better quality.

I understand this, however no one seems to know the difference. Is it psychologically better?

I just want to know the difference what the difference is between a 1k memory foam and 2k memory foam.

I would love to try both, but I cannot afford to try both. I just would like to understand what makes one better than the other when they are the same materials.

For example if both beds were not priced, by laying on it can you instantly feel the difference and you would know which is the 1k or 2k mattress?

I can understand a mattress being good quality and more comfortable. But I cannot understand the sheer 1k difference or even more sometimes when it is the same material?

Sorry if I sound to the point or ignorant, I like to spend a good amount on a good mattress, however I cannot understand the massive price difference.

5UB, usually the difference in price (apart from brands) is due to the composition of the memory foam itself - firmer mattresses will actually use a slightly different "blend" so to speak. The manufacturers just past this "R&D" cost onto the end user which I don't think is justifiable really...

But as said, if you are interested in them, take a few hours at a weekend to go look around some stores and actually lie down on them to get a feel for them. No one but yourself will be able to tell if you like it! :)

Tempur original (20). We got one three weeks ago for £2,200.

I cannot recommend it enough.

We've had a cheaper (£200) foam mattress of the bay for about 5 yrs now.
I've always wondered if the tempur mattresses are 'THAT' much better

The biggest issue is when you stay in a hotel. Normal mattresses are soo uncomfortable

There are several types of mattresses of different hardness rating. Personally I like harder mattresses and those with pocket springs myself. After you try them going back to normal springs is such a pain :(...

Go to a store and try different mattresses yourself to find one you like, it really does pay off to get a decent one if you are buying new. Just don't go overboard but I think couple of hundred is reasonable.

Apologies for bump but just thought I would add my experience with memory foam to the mix.

We replaced the mattress on the main (5ft) bed two years ago with a MF mattress from a local bed store, around £300. Not too bad but it is starting to wear now and you can feel the pockets through the foam sometimes. SWMBO has insisted on ordering a new bed, also has MF mattress so will see how that works out.

In the last couple of weeks I also replaced the spare (4'6"), where I spend most of the night due to my snoring problem (!!), with a MF mattress from a newspaper online store. Although it's comfortable enough the heat is unbearable when you wake in the middle of the night. Sweaty, headache and "drawn" feeling. So the verdict is out at present, will need to try some cooler bedding to see if that helps but until the weather warms up you need the thicker duvet on the bed first thing.

This was my thread originally - just wanted to say that in the end i went for an ergoflex mattress. Very happy with the purchase, mattress is very comfy and I dont find it too hot at all (this was one of my main concerns - and im a 14 stone of man of not small at all!).

Thanks for all of the advice folks, whilst I might try a tempur when im filthy rich, I would highly recommend ergoflex for now :)

On a side note, their delivery service is terrible. My mother in law watched the delivery man drive up to the flat, look at the front door from the window of his van and then drive off. Minutes later get a "we tried to deliver but you wern't there email". Had to kick up a fuss for them to redeliver.

I don't know if they're "better" or not, just they they are better for me. And more importantly for my wife who suffers from a bad back has not had issues since we got it. If thats how much it costs to get a good nights sleep for ~10 years, it's fine by me, I'd happily pay double.
