Finally have proof that 4-2-3-1 works in the EPL.

I've been playing 4-2-2-2 for the last three seasons. Standard defence with one of my FBs set in attacking mode. Two DMs, one as an AnMan and the other as a DLP. Two wingers and two up front. I'm convinced this tactic only works if your team has the ability of scoring more then you'll concede. You leave yourself with such massive space in the middle that you're always liable to concede, but if you're fluid and quick enough you'll also score a hell of a lot too.

Getting into the EPL as a weak side, 4-2-3-1 works so well. Been playing 4-2-2-2 for most of the season and left myself so exposed - I lost 9-2 against Man City as they scored with pretty much every attack.

I ended up going to 4-2-3-1 a couple of months ago, in fact leaving out some of my better players (forwards) in order to accommodate the formation. My form has been excellent since then. I've been winning the 50-50 games comfortably. I read a post a couple of months ago with regards to setting up your team tactically and it really opened my eyes. Will try to post it if I find it.

Evidence - the statistic I'm most interested in is goals scored/conceded versus similar rated teams:

Well I've not updated in a while, and I know you're all eagerly awaiting news of Burnley's latest exploits :D

Since winning the League cup in season 5, I went onto finish that season winning the Europa League as well. Ended up 8th in the league same as season 4, I was in 5th but I drew 5 and lost 2 of the last 7 premier league games.

Prior to starting season 6 I spent £22m on 2 15-year olds and a 17-year old. They have been used on the fringes of the squad but they are not first teamers.

Season 6 went well. Lost in the semi finals of the FA Cup to Spurs 1-0, should have won but the semi was 3 days after I was taken to extra time in the 6th round replay by Bristol City. My side was too exhausted against spurs. I successfully retained the Europa League though, beating Ajax 1-0 in the final and I finished 3rd in the league, so 1st time in the Champions League for me next season.

I did have a horrible build up of fixtures at the end of the season though. 6 games in the last 13 days.

can anyone reccomend a striker for blue square premier?

i dont think mine are up to it, they were only just ok for south.

i have 0 transfer budget but have just been taken over so mite be able to get something from the board now.

Out of interest do you try to stick to your formations? I've got a reasonable 4-4-2 going on here but I try to rotate my strikers for the best effect. Problem is, only two are natural strikers and the others are attacking midfielders, who prefer the inside forward role. I prefer my players to be perfectly fluid so I try and use them for how they are trained but this isn't always possible of course. If I was to move my AM to the poacher position for example, it does have some bearing on my tactics. Would you leave the IF where he is or move him? Does it really matter do you think?

Have a look at Noel Makumba-something (Black lad from Alloa - Scottish 2nd Div IIRC) I grabbed him at Mansfield, he is 16 (First season) and pretty damn good! Cost me £45K or so compo...

I got him as well :D He's a great striker! He's worth £100k now with my Ayr team in the SPL. I paid £35k for him several seasons back.

Haha, I just signed him in the Scottish 2nd Div as I can't sign anyone over 17 :p

4-2-3-1 has been by far the most succesful formation for me. Goals a plenty from the 4 most forward players and always easy to find 2 solid defensive midfielers.

Well, first game in and I'm unbeaten after 10 games.... sounds good no? Well, I've only won 1 and I've drawn the rest :/

Struggling to score
Struggling to hold on to leads, always seem to lose a goal in the last 5 mins

Due to not enough chances? Strikers feeding off scraps? Or are your strikers getting plenty but not putting them away?

Attacking set pieces: Are you sending your giant centre-backs up for corners and IDKs? Are you assigning the best players to take corners?

1. Increase your players match fitness in the long term... but in the short term, stop them from running around as much in the first 85 mins by using the "Take A Breather" touchline shout, and/or switching to a different tactic, and/or bringing on fresh defensive legs.
2. Pick defenders [well, all players, ideally] with higher Concentration and Determination.

Mini update on top of my last update:

Brendon Rogers just resigned as England manager after the 2018 world cup as they went out in the quarter finals on penalties to Ukraine.

I am now the Engalnd and Burnley manager.

My board still wont let me increase the size of Turf Moor though. Claiming we don't have the fan base, yet average attendance is something like 88% of capacity. Hopefully this seasons champions league football will result in a few more sellouts.

Thanks for the response. A mix of the first two, not creating many chances but also what we do create is quite poor. Will have a look at all of this tonight. Is it easy enough to go back and have a look at past games to try and isolate issues?

Lost 6 in a row for my Bristol Rovers team, any tips on league two formations ?

I've got David Suazo/Junior Agogo/Nicolas Bignall( loan from reading ) as my 3 strikers and i rotate them.
4-4-2, direct, fast tempo. Quite wide at home, narrower away. Hard tackling, high pressing. Rigid philosophy.

Centre backs: Limited Defenders; set your fastest one on Cover duty. Set both to be Defensive/Ultra Defensive mentality and no creative freedom.

Central midfield: Ball-Winning Midfielder [Support if he can pass, Defend if he can't]. Team him up with an Advanced Playmaker, one of the few players you can give a bit of creative freedom to. BWM is crucial: needs to be strong, determined, fast and have good tackling and positional awareness. A good BWM will quickly become your cult hero :)

Wingers: Cross from Byline. Train Player Preferred Moves - Hug touchline, knock ball past opponent, get forward often, run down left/right. Keep them wide in Wide Play.

Up top: One AF or Poacher, one DLF or Target Man, if you've got a strong tall one good at headers. Run into channels from Wide Play. Neither should have as much of an Attacking mentality as you may think, as they don't have the Finishing/Composure to be that attacking at that level [if you're getting Clear Cut Chances but not converting them, this is a prime suspect]. Pace and Acceleration important for Poacher/AF, obviously.

Set pieces: really spend some time with the Set Piece creator, as it can reap huge dividends. Got a tall, fast player with good Anticipation, Jumping and Heading? Get him to attack near post at corners, and make sure corner takers are aiming at the near post or 6-yard box with inswinging corners [so your right-footed corner taker takes corners over on the left side of the pitch, and vice-versa].

I should point out that this is all stuff I've learned from FM2012, but the match engine hasn't changed very much from what I can gather, and the principles are all sensible.

HTH :)
