GameStop: next Xbox sales will suffer if used games are blocked

Given this console will reportedly REQUIRE an internet connection to even play games and games will not work without a valid activation code which then ties the game to your account, this is going to be no small order.

Not only are you going to have to bypass the copy protection hardware, whilst fooling it and keeping it off the net whilst having the device thinking it is, you are also potentially going to have to the crack the activation key system and the microsoft account servers.

Its like saying people will get round the lack of 2nd hand games on steam by hacking Steam. It just doesnt happen as its stupidly difficult.

It's nothing like steam people still pirate games on the pc. Give it time people will find a way, I'm sure when they do they'll be able to find ways around security n requiring the internet.

Indie games on the xbox 360 are already like that. Require you to buy the game and then it is tied to your account and then you need to be connected at all times to play it.

They are available for hacked boxes and can be played without being connected to live.

You think microsoft don't know about these flaws and are planning ways to prevent them in the next xbox ?

Currently the only way to keep your hacked xbox playing pirated games is to keep it off the net, something you won't be able to do with the 720

This new console is going to be exactly like steam. Only difference is you have a bluray to save you downloading the content.

There will always be a way. I doubt you'll be able to stay connected to the net but there will be some hack at some point to the people that want it.

Just like ubisoft DRM games have been cracked etc.

Granted somebody somewhere will come up with a way round it.

As soon as an exploit is found, microsoft will then just let you carry on using it, until they then out of the blue disable the ability to play games online your xbox.

They do this with the 360, the only way to avoid this is once you crack your xbox, keep it off the net. Won't be so easy with the 720 given it won't work without a net connection.... And with 720, they may remove the ability to play games altogether ...

I'd trade in more games, but the prices are so pathetically low I can't be bothered most of the time, especially if you've had the game for long enough and when you finally are considering getting rid of it, it's hardly worth anything.

As long as new copies of games that have already been out a significant time aren't still £40-50 (looking at you, GAME) I wouldn't mind purchases being tied to my account, I've been used to that on Steam for years now.

If you take a look at black ops 2 available for download on the xbox360 at the mo, its nearly £50.

It wasn't that much when it came out! Plus I get a case and a CD!

That's what i'd be doing. 3-4 on release day and the rest when they're dead cheap. So publishers would be making less money.

they wouldnt actually , they would make more in the end. because your trading in more games then you are buying which are going back into the system and disrupting sales of those games you just traded in.

either way you look at it is good for the devs, and if we want devs to actually exist apart from activision, EA we need to change our purchasing behavior and support the people that actually matter in this industry as its certainly not retail.

So disk based games don't get cracked on the pc no?

Don't get me wrong I don't want this system to be ruined by black beard and co, but I can see it coming, it'll be to play their "non pirated" games offline.

Microsoft will have seen all their current flaws and addressed them in the 720.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying its going to be unbreakable, but the requirement to have the device connected to the internet and talking to microsoft 24/7 is going to make it extremely difficult and a constant cat and mouse game as microsoft release counter fixes to the exploits found which will be mandatory in order to be play games.

Plus there is the omnipotent threat that Microsoft will one day remotely brick your xbox for using the hack as they do with JTAG'd xbox 360s.

If this is true I will not be buying tthe next xbox (all games are 2nd hand)
I also do not have a paid live account

Looking like no next gen console for me!

You see I can't understand that mentality

Because the publishers will now be getting all of the sales money from 1/2/3 year old game sales, the games will get cheaper quicker.

Look at Forza horizon, it was only released 4 months ago and it can already be found 50 % off the launch price.

Besides pre owned games were rarely cheaper by any significant margin. Look at black ops 2 now

New RRP : £42.99
Used Price: £39.99

thats a whole £3 cheaper.

why is the lack of pre owned games such an issue ?

Cod is not a good example it almost always stays up in price until 2 or 3 months before the next one.

Everything else can be found for utter bargains second hand within 2 months. Cod rrp stays up for ages for some reason.

Any links where it says you will require Internet all the time? If so then I can't get the next Xbox as my stability on line would cause me issues. Wow way to lose sales with all the people who don't play or connect online.

I think I got gow 1,2,3 for under a tenner off the bay. Sometimes those cheapo web pawn shops have great cheap deals.
Halo as well, got halo 1 and 2 for less than £ 1 per disc. Etc etc

The always on inet will be an issue for me too. If it means my game will stop if the net goes down , again, this console will not be viable. It happens a lot here. Often steam/xbox live says disconnected.
