Chris Taylor on the Fall of Gas Powered Games

He sold the rights to SC

oh... its like a conspiracy to stop us playing new RTS games

Back to Dune 2000 for me then :D

I came across Planetary Annihilation a little while back and watch the video. I have to admit I'm not sure at the minute, it looks fun, but only time will tell if its got plenty of strategy and depth. Hopefully there will be a free demo to try it out.

His last video update on the Kickstarter explains why he's not doing an RTS for kickstarter. Basically, he doesn't think there is any point in doing an RTS unless he goes big with it - otherwise people wanting the next TA or SC will be disappointed - and to do that would take a lot more money that he thinks they would be able to get with Kickstarter (5m+).
So his plan is to Wildman - which he says can be done with a smaller budget - and then aim to do an RTS once they are in a better financial position to fund it.

Just watched that video posted, quite like the concept of wildman never even heard of it till now.

It is a shame that so much money goes to the publishers and the people that make them get hardly anything in return, i just kinda assumed that they would get a reasonable slice of the pie.

Kickstarter has been such a great thing so many games like Elite, Planetary Annihilation, Wasteland which would never have been funded by the big publishers which would rather crank out endless copy's of boring rubbish with no innovation.

I really hope he hits his targets and gets a ton more on top would love to see more people like him making games.

Talks about TA, Sup Com and why he changed things with Sup Com 2.

Warning it's lengthy.

"I made the best RTS in history*, I then made a successor that while not quite as popular was also amazing, then Square Enix gave me a truckload of money to consolize the sequel and turn my back on my fanbase"

How is that lengthy? ^^

*TA defeated newer games like Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and Red Alert 2 to be awarded the title "best RTS game of all time" by Gamespy users, seven years after its release.

Bumpty bump

A great watch that anyone interested in gaming should watch. Chris seems like a really nice guy and I hate to see the pain he and his company are going through.

Watching this will make you very angry with publishers

That was a really good interview (well the interviewer was pretty bad imo :p ) but Chris Taylor really does lay it out. You can really tell he is in it for the fun, the enjoyment of games. The business side comes second, sadly that will be his downfall in a cut throat business like the game industry at the moment.

I really hope they make their target.

Great interview, I really feel for Chris since he seems a really good guy.

The publishers really are a cancer that needs wiping out. What's really needed is crowdfunding where you can properly invest in companies making these great games.

I mean I'm happy to pay around the going price for a game plus a bit extra for some nice bonuses if it's something I know I'd play nonstop (Elite!) but paying £100+ just seems silly.

However I may pay £100 up front if there was some sort of profit share once a project competed. If their kickstarter game totally blows up and they make £50 million then why can't i get my £100 back?

From the sounds of the interviews he has given previously I would guess that he decided to just pull it.

It's a real shame that it wasn't successful and it's also quite a big shame that he didn't let it run it's course - miracles do happen sometimes (as unlikely as it was).

Still haven't forgiven them for the way 'Demigod' was treated tbh.
Really badly rolled out, and a shame as it was a good game with potential.

That's pretty much it - GPG sunk their own money into Demigod and it was a botched project. They also overextended themselves developing too many titles at once after Supcom. Add to that the THQ problems and you have no revenue streams left.
