Non traditional board games

I meet up with my mates every week for a board game night and we do an alldayer every couple of months to play out those longer games.

From memory....

Powergrid
Imperial
Race for the galaxy
Settlers of Catan
Dungeon Lords
Through the ages
Eclipse
Cosmic Encounter
Discworld
Descent
Talisman
BSG
Small Worlds
Warrior Knights

plus loads of others!

I've "discovered" board games via TableTop on YouTube, and we're beginning to have semi-regular gaming nights, although more people is always good!

Could do with finding or setting up a group and do this regularly, need something in the Nottingham/Mansfield area!

Mondo Comico in Hockley (Nottingham city center) run regular games during the day time and after closing. Never popped down to play, though, as I normally just book a bunch of friends for a Saturday and spend most the day/evening playing various things and having a few drinks at home once a month or so.

Popped down to Telford last year for Games Lore's Telford Mini-Con, which was a lot of fun. Found a welcoming group pretty quickly and spent a good three hours longer there than we intended to playing a sprawling game of "Colonial"!

Getting into these games a lot recently as well since the family always argue witht he 'traditional' sort.

Now the arguments are even bigger but usually end in laughter which is a good starting point at least.

Got:

Munchkin
Smallworld
Ticket To Ride
Tsuro (awesome fun!)
Get Bit
Zombie Dice
Chuthlu Dice
War on Terror

Need more players though and nothing appears to be played locally :(

I highly recommend Battlestar Galactica if you can find 4-5 friends to play it with. On the surface it's a co-op game. However, one or more players is a Cylon secretly working against the group. You can imagine the paranoia and accusations that fly around the table. :D

I'm also a big fan of Pandemic, Last Night on Earth and Powergrid. I tried the Game of Thrones board game but wasn't impressed by the balance.

Just a thought, but since i have no idea what to get my brother for his birthday, and he's really into Settlers of Catan... suggestions? :D

Ticket to Ride is a very popular 'entry' boardgame. Get the Europe version if you do go for it! It is also available on Steam :D

Agreed, though as mentioned earlier, the base game by itself is a little lacking, something you'll appreciate once you play with the expansions. They fix some mechanics and add more player characters. Like Cally, who's once per game is always fun to threaten people with :D

Another game people should check out is Coup.

Agin, it extremely simple, games will rarely take more than 15 minutes, so it is a strong filler game, but one that often leaves you wanting 'one more game'. Up to 6 players, there are 15 cards in a deck, three copies of 5 different characters. The Duke, Captain, Ambassador, Contessa and Assassin.
You are playing as the head of a high ranking family in italy, vying for control of the country. You get dealt two cards from the deck which you keep face down, these represent your influence. If you lose both of your influence then you are out of the game.

On your turn you can do one of these actions. For instance, if you have a duke then you can take 3 gold from the bank. If not, you could take Foreign Aid and take two coins, but someone with a duke could block you, and you get nothing. The coup is unblockable, removing one players influence instantly for 7 coins.

The key thing is that the cards are all face down. Nobody knows what cards you have, and you don't know what cards anyone else has. At any point in the game when someone claims to have a certain character (A duke when taxing, for example) you can call them on it. If they were bluffing, they lose an influence and turn one of their cards face up, that card is out of the game, so everyone knows there is one less of that card. Or if they do reveal a card of that name, you lose an influence for an incorrect challenge. I've seen games where all 6 players on their first turned used the Tax action, despite there only being 3 dukes in the game.

Again, a very simple game to learn, there are only 5 different cards and everyone gets a copy of the cheat sheet, which is essentially the rules, but it plays so well with all the bluffing and backstabbing.

Discworld, discworld discworld!

I forgot how much I love board games but last Friday we ended up playing this at a mates house.

Love how each player has different objectives :)

Haven't read every post,

but has anyone mentioned SmallWorld? That's a top game.

Also love carcasonne, ticket to ride and race for the galaxy.

Small world got a few mentions in here. Only played it once, but it just didn't grab me like most of the games have. I think I prefer longer term games where you don't just control a race for a couple of turns before replacing it with another one.
Days of wonder did have a kickstarter going for a remake of the iPad app for small world. Currently there is an app out there but it hasnt been updated in a while. Hey were going to add in expansions, new features and possibly pc and android support as well. But the kickstarter page they made with all the pledge levels and so on was so confusing so they closed it down wih plans to restart the kickstarter in the near future.

Looked at this a couple of time, what do you think about it?

Re small worlds....personally I'm not a fan of it, I dont like the way it plays.

another good one, espeically as a filler game between other long ones is Quarriors! a dice based game, aspects of "deck building" but using dice and their random factor.

Very good game Mice and Mystics. The theme is strong and the rules and mechanics great. Played it last night and we all got killed by the cat. Boo.

Quarriors is on my list to get but it's got a few ahead of it first such as Stone Age, Pandemic, Power Grid and Suburbia. As for Small World. I live it. Days of Wonder is my favourite game company. I love Ticket to Ride.

Does anyone have any experience with Khet, the game that uses lasers and mirrored pieces?

I keep being tempted by it but have been seeing a lot of complaints on Amazon and BGG about pieces not being constructed very well, and thus the bouncing of the beam can be off. Which sounds like it kind of wrecks the game, to me!

We usually get the Colditz board out every year at Xmas, enjoy playing that :)

I remember playing Escape from Colditz about 25 years ago.
Recently purchased Last night on Earth. I haven't had the opportunity to play it or rather can't find anybody willing to play.

:(

LNoE is great fun. Some really good scenarios also available for free from the website.

That's my problem: finding folk who don't assume it's a nerdfest.

I've got a few friends who are mad-keen but 'er indoors...isn't so much. :)

Catan is a winner, heard good things about Carcassonne and want to try Ticket to Ride. The afore mentioned triad did manage to have a few games of Hero Quest one nigh. A good time had by all, despite initial misgivings!
