Domestic driving hours? In a car???

That's news to me!! - I assume you have no tachograph or similar driving recording device, so how - if at all - could it be enforced??

As far as commercials are concerned, under domestic driving hours, you can drive for 9 hours per day/shift extending to 10 hours twice in a working week, putting it simply (the practice has many variances) you can drive for 5 days one week and 6 the next & so on....

It can't really bee enforced however we have paperwork of what time we collect and drop and if there was a serious accident and it got investigated it wouldn't be hard to find out.

You've quoted EU Domestic driving hours Most probably because they apply to you so you dont need to know our side

We don't fall into that category so we have to use the GB domestic driving hours

The main limits and requirements for goods vehicle drivers are:

- 10 hours maximum daily driving;
- 11 hours maximum daily duty.

 Better convert whatever car you get to have a commode in the front passenger seat! :( Bad luck.

Its not a new thing to me I (like a lot of blokes) have been suffering for near 3 yrs before finally going to the Docs. So now hope the meds will at least make it less bad if not a lot better.

At least its not Cancer

Ahh, cheers for that. I was confusing EU with domestic (I drive under EU rules)

I wish domestic applied, I'd love a working limit of 11 instead of my current 15hours!!!

All I'm saying is I find a large HGV much less tiring to drive over a relatively long distance compared to driving a car, whatever the make / model of car too - I found this with all of my cars, from my e38 7,e39 5 etc down to a Peugeot 309 I owned a few years back, the truck is imo the less taxing to drive compared to a car over a similar distance

This is why Range Rovers are so good. Absolutely love driving those for a similar reason. Nice upright seating position too which is much more comfortable than low down 2 seater type cars like my SL500.

Sounds like you get into a car and your brain goes into overdrive.

Omgz so low to the ground, I have the ability to jump from 60mph to 90mph within seconds, omgz , omgz , omgz I need to watch every single detail on the Mway as I am going so much faster than what I am used.

I think that's whats happens in your case.

I did 600 miles in the 530i in one day, was perfectly fine. Did 600 miles in a Fiesta 1.2, was nearly dying and believe it or not, I had a little weep near Tamworth.

I don't agree with your presumption there mate (although I would cry too after 600 miles in a 1.2 Fiesta!!) - although perhaps it was the misery of Tamworth that tipped you over the edge?? ;)

I do however think Jez in his post above has it spot on.

Ok what on earth is this logic that high up = comfort?

I'm going to test drive a Land Cruiser now and see what it's like, I'm clearly missing a trick here!

Also I didn't cry, just a very light weeping wondering where I went wrong in my life to end up doing 600 miles in a Fiesta!

High up does not equal comfort, although higher up does give you a much better view of the road.

What gives far more comfort is sitting in a more upright position, in the type of chair you get in a Range Rover (or i assume, lorry).

Being able to see beyond the van ahead of you does wonders for your perception of road hazards and hence state of 'readiness'. Much easier to read the road and therefore less drive fatigue, let alone the benefits of command driving position posture and the refinement of a Range Rover. Theres is nothing like it for motorway wafting. :D

Agreed. And yes, you do sit in a fairly upright position in a truck, whilst undoubtedly a trucks ride is not as comfortable as that of a Range Rover, the air suspended seat goes along way to counter this.

Also, when in something like a Volvo FH or Scania Topline, your field of vision is superb - you can easily see over the top of even a Range Rover!

This is why on motorways you'll often see a truck begin to brake long before the cars in front of it, the driver is seeing what's going on ahead long before the car drivers, it all makes for an overall more relaxing drive, despite the concentration & awareness needed in a large vehicle.

Anyway OP, made a decision yet?? :)

Main benefit of a Range Rover is you only need to be in the car around 65% of the time that you would be in a HGV to cover the same distance ;)

If you can stomach the looks then the BMW 5GT may be a worthy contender. They seem good value for money and generally well spec'd.

The load space is pretty impressive. I'd like to see the dimensions and capacity in comparison to a F11.

I know, it's a shame they can't pull 30t payloads :(

On the plus side, in a large Scania, most car drivers don't perceive you to be a rich ****! :D

Stop talking about Range Rovers. The Mrs says I'm not allowed. Plus 27mpg on a good day just isn't going to cut the mustard

I really like the looks and the interior of the Merc plus its not a BMW:D
However the...What looks like much cheaper running costs of the BMW means the sensible idea would be the 5 series.

However the hospital have put me on pretty strong medication so I'm going to be chained to the white throne for a few days whilst my body adapts.

At least I can spend some more time researching :D

F11 has a bigger boot with the seats up.
F07 has a bigger load capacity with the seats down.
