Hi all

Me and my dad run a small contracting company that does Geo-technical ground stabilization - its quite a specialist field in some respects and its good to have a mix of people around you that are apprentices learning the job and more experienced lead Drillers

Recently we had one guy leave for various reasons and to be honest we were glad to see the back of him

Then another guy decided he had found another job and we found ourselves negotiating to keep him as he is good at his job.

The other company was offering to give him more money (which we matched) and to work 6 days a week with Saturday been an 8 while 2 shift for a whole days pay. We also mentioned that we would be getting more vans and one would end up been his for traveling to work in.

They were also offering him 28 days holiday + bank holidays - now the statutory requirement is obviously 20 days + bank/national holidays, this doesn't increase due to working every Saturday.

He did want to stay but was obviously interested in what we been offered to him - the subject of holidays came up amongst the other directors here and we have always given 20 days to our employees and no more.

It was suggested that we give him, and the other long term employees 2 more days a year which is pretty much a token gesture compared to 8 more - now this caused some disagreement here which surprised me as out of the four people including him it would apply too, three of them did not even use all there holiday entitlement last year.

It was decided that this was too generous and we would not be changing the entitlement at all which amongst other things probably contributed to him leaving for the other job.

Now i am wondering how normal is it to go above the statutory requirement ? how many companies offer additional holiday days as incentive ?

I think i'd have gone for the holidays too, especially when working every Saturday.

I do 5 days and have 33 days inc' bank holidays.

20 days + bank holidays...

Well my problem with this situation is i can see the day to day costs of losing the experienced people.

I also have come straight from uni where as some of the other people making the decisions have come from other full time jobs where apparently giving anyone extra holiday days was not done.

Its an interesting one - company I work for is generally begrudging to give anything over the statutory requirements but is quite generous with holidays.

Most places I've worked holiday allowance has mostly been along the lines of statutory amount for first year - extra 2 days after that, then another extra 5 days for every 5 years you've worked there upto a set max.

6 day working week with only 20 days holiday?

With the new company he would be working 6 days a week every week, and he would get 28 days + bank holidays

With us he would have likely continued doing 5 days and the odd Saturday, we said if ended up doing 1/4 of Saturdays with us then based on what they are giving him 2 extra days seems about right.

I struggle with my Mon-Fri 9-5 with 29 day entitlement to keep enough for the whole year. God knows how someone doesn't take 20 with a 6 day working week!

Maybe give people an extra couple of days leave after x amount of years working for the company? Or for every year where there hasn't been a sick day claimed an extra day is gained etc

Your bank holidays change though... last year there was 9.. and this year there is an extra one with the royal birth isn't there ?

Lets be clear... we only work 5 days, its very rarely if ever we work a Saturday and if they do they are paid extra. We give them 20 days + bank holidays

The other company he would work every Saturday so 6 days a week and they are giving him 28 + bank holidays

The three people who didn't take there holidays are two apprentices who have been with us since they were 18 and the guy in question who didn't take 3 of his days.

20 days?

LOL.

I get 30 plus bank holidays....... I usually use 25. Wouldn't go anywhere offering less than 25+BH.

No I'm sorry but 20 days including bank holidays is not good enough. Work to live don't live to work. Don't expect your employees to be there because they genuinely want to be. For goodness sake, don't take advantage of a horrific employment situation nationally by giving the minimum and expecting the maximum in return. I would suggest that this is a lesson learnt and one clearly learnt by the company who are trying to pinch your staff who obviously are feeling under valued by your **** poor ethics towards holiday entitlement.

Always make me laugh how so many people will say they 'enjoy work' but then moan and gripe about a lack of holiday entitlement.

People are saying 20 days is tight but on a 5 day week that's 4 weeks off a year, or a month off. 30 days is 6 weeks off, when you then throw in bank holidays that's quite a lot of entitlement.

Well i am trying to gauge what is normal to be honest.. i want to build a case to get it changed, is there any statistics anywhere on what is the average in industries ?

I get 25 days + bank holidays as standard. Then after two complete years I get an additional days holiday for each year served up to a maximum of 30 days in total.

Big pharma, IT role. 33 days + BH. Although to be fair these are quite generous and are from a previous company T/Cs as part of TUPE. New employees get 20 days going up incrementally to a maximum of 25 with years of service. All employees can purchase an additional 5 days of holiday, up to a maximum of 30 days.

Cheers, Paul.

Its a lot of cost for a business and its a lot of loss of productivity, thats ignoring the cost of having to have enough staff to cover situations where people are off.
