Hi all
Me and my dad run a small contracting company that does Geo-technical ground stabilization - its quite a specialist field in some respects and its good to have a mix of people around you that are apprentices learning the job and more experienced lead Drillers
Recently we had one guy leave for various reasons and to be honest we were glad to see the back of him
Then another guy decided he had found another job and we found ourselves negotiating to keep him as he is good at his job.
The other company was offering to give him more money (which we matched) and to work 6 days a week with Saturday been an 8 while 2 shift for a whole days pay. We also mentioned that we would be getting more vans and one would end up been his for traveling to work in.
They were also offering him 28 days holiday + bank holidays - now the statutory requirement is obviously 20 days + bank/national holidays, this doesn't increase due to working every Saturday.
He did want to stay but was obviously interested in what we been offered to him - the subject of holidays came up amongst the other directors here and we have always given 20 days to our employees and no more.
It was suggested that we give him, and the other long term employees 2 more days a year which is pretty much a token gesture compared to 8 more - now this caused some disagreement here which surprised me as out of the four people including him it would apply too, three of them did not even use all there holiday entitlement last year.
It was decided that this was too generous and we would not be changing the entitlement at all which amongst other things probably contributed to him leaving for the other job.
Now i am wondering how normal is it to go above the statutory requirement ? how many companies offer additional holiday days as incentive ?
