Windows 9

Windows 7 got rid of the classic start menu but I don't recall such a hue and cry about it.

No, but that's because the Start Menu that it has does not flip you to another screen.

I'm using my laptop at the moment which I put Windows 8 on to. I am cheating, using Start8, but it's useful to get to know other aspects of Windows 8, while the Start8 trial lasts. When it runs out I'll see if I can handle Metro, knowing about the other shortcuts.

I will say though, before installing Start8 it was jarring to press the Windows key to search for programs and getting another screen up. If MS gave the option of the classic Start menu with the Metro style (hard disk searching) search in the search box I'd be very happy.

forgot to mention, not only bring aero back but introduce full window transparency optional on a per application Id basis, similar to nix and virtual dimension application.

What would also be nice is if they added a shell emulator with advanced options like putty tray. But that is highly unlikely, MS don't care about real PC uses they just care about this fictional pc user that wants to play with big blocks all day.

When I say classic I'm referring to a start menu integrated into the desktop environment/shell.

Windows 95-7 shell WAS the desktop, with a seamlessly integrated start menu.
Windows 8 shell IS Metro (a tablet UI), the desktop simply runs as an application on top of it and lacks an integrated start menu, when you want to access applications you must flick back to the disastrous tablet UI.

Well I'm confused ....

I launch pretty much every application I use regularly from the taskbar (same as I've done with every other version of Windows since 98)! I must be doing something wrong :p

Some people never cease to amaze me. We are getting our priorities wrong with asking MS to go back to classic Windows.

Let's face it, the command line is much faster than using a stupid graphical interface for idiots. Why waste time using your hands to move the mouse when everything is a short key command away?

We are really going back in progress by moving to GUIs: they slow down work flow and make it a pain to do any productive work. These GUIs are a disaster to any computer user.

;)

Back in the day people used to say, 'why would I hide all my shortcuts away in a Start menu when I can have them right there on the desktop? It's just unnecessary clicks'.

For those who really, really want a Start menu you've already got multiple alternatives. I'm pretty PO'd that Windows doesn't play DVDs out of the box any more, but you just get over it and download what you need to get the job done. If you need a codec or text editor or a temperature monitor or menu style program launcher... then just go and get one.

without GUI's it would take me much longer to do things

> bring back the start icon!! (although then it would just look like Windows 7 again, with some slight differences).

> Also, make a different version for desktop. the laptop/tablet version would be suited to touch screens, with a similar theme to the current Win8, whereas the desktop version would have a more "mouse-friendly" UI, so no stupid lock screen where you have to drag stuff up and down and wherever just to get into your PC, and scrolling that goes horizontal when you can only scroll vertically on a conventional mouse. I cannot see gamers with 28" touch-screen monitors trying to use the current Win8; you'd get arm ache because of endless reaching... fine for a tablet, but not for desktop PC.

> It's too boxy. go back to the old Win7 Aero theme.

> at the moment, you can't search for programs in the search bar (in what's supposed to be the start menu, but is in fact a load of tiles, similar to my bathroom), so i would like that back. it's much easier, still being on Win7 to just search for a program (or files) through the start bar.

> It's too hotmail/messenger/skype-based. things are linked to hotmail contacts, which you may not want. i mean, at least with Win7, you could choose to ignore that stupid contacts folder, that nobody ever uses. So i think they should detach it slightly from communication, after all, computers aren't just used to talk to people and surf the net.

> it treats you like an idiot. when you get a BSOD, you get a massive picture of a sad face, and something that says: "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart". WHAT PROBLEM?? WHERE'S THAT MEMORY CRASH DUMP METER THAT USED TO BE THERE? WHY IS THAT SAD FACE STARING AT ME, AND WHY IS THIS TREATING ME LIKE AN IDIOT? (you get the idea, i hope). please can we have the old BSOD screen back in Win9??

> and finally, make it simple! if a pensioner gets lost in it, it's probably too difficult to use. also, if Win9 is similar to Win7, people will have a much better idea of how to navigate, as it has essentially been the same since windows 95.

Sorry about my moderately long rant, i should probably end it here :)

It's another thing entirely when Microsoft are removing these features though, that's what bothers me about it. Before Windows 8 I was actually hoping we might see some kind of Blu-ray support included, but instead we've taken a massive stride backwards in that regard.

Wrong.

If you ever come accustomed to bash then you'll realise how amazing it is.

To open Firefox all I have to do is Ctrl + Alt + T and then type firefox and slam enter.

To move a file Ctrl + Alt+ T and mv (or mvdir for directory) /usr/keiron/desktop/something.jpg /user/keiron/pictures

It's pretty useful to 'master', but you don't really have to master it at all.

This does not even reach emacs level of absurdness yet. :p
